Museum research is multi-dimensional and essential for excellence in all aspects of museum collections and conservation. Research creates new knowledge, disseminates information and increases scientific knowledge; it also establishes provenances, origins and interpretations. Objects-based research is encouraged in adherence to an established research policy according to sound and acceptable scholarly methodology contributing to a balanced and integrated approach and understanding of the University's art and heritage collections.
Access to the museum collections and use of these collections into the academic programmes of the University is rapidly expanding, and the availability of museum research online will maximize this accessibility. The museums also administer several research loan agreements to external and internal researchers. Basic and applied museum research programmes are aligned with collection, exhibition and conservation priorities, thereby contributing and supporting the core values of the university in promoting research, training and teaching.
