Delaware requires drivers to carry three types of auto insurance: Bodily Injury Protection, Property Damage, and Personal Injury Protection (PIP). PIP, which is not required in all states, pays medical expenses and loss of wages for you and all of your passengers, up to a limit you select when purchasing a policy. It’s a good thing to have if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. Auto insurance rates in Massachusetts have dropped 8.2% since the state relaxed its regulation of insurance companies. Under the new “managed competition” plan, several of the countries largest insurance companies have started writing policies in the state and it appears that the number of uninsured drivers has decreased. According to a 2007 study, 1% of Massachusetts drivers are uninsured, the lowest rate in the nation.
