The area is surrounded by many mountains, such as the McDowell Mountains, the White Tank Mountains, the Superstition Mountains, and the Sierra Estrella. The city itself contains two mountains, which are the Phoenix Mountains and the South Mountains.
Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the United States with a population of over 1.5 million people. Due to its location to the mountains and its sunny weather, there are many outdoor activities to do in Phoenix. Parks and recreation is the main hub for residents and visitors alike. The city has many water parks, amusement parks, and golf courses. Many parks were set up to preserve the natural landscape and eliminate residential zoning. Places such as Papago Park and the Desert Botanical Park display plant life not only from Phoenix, but deserts all over the world.
Phoenix is not only well known for its beauty, however it is also known for its crimes. In the beginning of the 2000’s it was known as the “Kidnapping Capital of the United States”. However, many of the kidnapped people are typically illegal aliens, but statistics do not verify the claims. The good news is that Phoenix has seen a drop in violent crime over the past decade.
