Staff Professional Development Seminars Calendar

staff members As a legislative staffer, you are automatically a member of NCSL. Take advantage of our research and information services, as well as new learning opportunities by participating in one or several of the Professional Development Seminars listed below. Through these Professional Development Seminars you create a unique network for research assistance, consultation and professional support. 

Please note, NCSL offers a wide array of e-learning opportunities, including webinars, throughout the year.  If you do not see a face-to-face meeting scheduled this year for your legislative staff organization, please contact your NCSL liaison to learn of other professional development opportunities.

Personal and District Office Staff Professional Development Training  
If you work directly for a member or are part of a team that reports to the member, you find yourself in a challenging legislative environment where the demands of the job seldom leave time for professional development and training. This one-day seminar is designed for you. You’ll receive specialized training and the opportunity to network with colleagues across the nation in similar jobs. You’ll learn strategies for managing your time and your office, constituent service tips and tools, and media relations, to name a few. The seminar is sponsored by the Personal Staff Network.

LSMI is an 8-day intensive executive management training program for senior legislative staff that focuses on practical application of tools that legislative staff can use to meet the increasingly complex policy and management demands confronting state legislatures.

National Legislative Services and Security Association (NLSSA) Fall Training Conference
Founded in 1973, NLSSA is open to Sergeants-at-Arms, security personnel, state police and support services staff for state legislatures.  The professional development seminars feature a diverse group of faculty on a wide range of security, historic preservation, personnel and administrative topics.  Join us for a wide range of training, tours, workshops, roundtables and networking opportunities.

National Legislative Program Evaluation Staff (NLPES) Fall Professional Development Seminar
Colleagues from across the nation are invited to attend the 2011 NLPES Professional Development Seminar. This year’s conference will offer timely workshops, informative group panel presentations, and expert speakers from a variety of states. Training opportunities will be provided for both new and experienced legislative program evaluators, legislative performance auditors and other state legislative employees.

American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries (ASLCS) Fall Professional Development Seminar
This seminar brings together participants from across the country and internationally to learn important skills and procedures, build relationships, and bring home new ideas aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of state legislatures. Legislative clerks and secretaries, and their staff, are members of ASLCS and are involved with the lawmaking and administrative processes of state legislatures.

National Association of Legislative Information Technology (NALIT) Professional Development Seminar
If you are involved in technology and information systems in state legislatures, NALIT's Professional Development Seminar is the meeting for you. This four-day seminar supplies extensive training and information on the latest trends and best solutions for legislative IT managers and technical staff.

Research and Committee Staff Section (RACSS)
Founded in 1979, RACSS is the organization for legislative staff involved in research, policy analysis, committee staffing, or constituent services.  RACSS members work for legislative research or chamber offices, caucuses, committees or individual legislators.

Legislative Information and Communications Staff (LINCS) Professional Development Seminar
LINCS is the only national association for staff with public information, civic education and media relations responsibilities. LINCS provides four days of training in the Fall for staffers to learn from national experts as well as exchange information with colleagues from around the nation.

Leadership Staff Section (LSS) Professional Development Seminar
Each year LSS offers a four-day professional skill development seminar. This year LSS will meet jointly with the Legislative Information and Communications Staff (LINCS). LSS is designed for legislative staff who work directly for legislative leaders or for party caucuses in policy research, constituent services, public information and administration.

Legislative Research Librarians (LRL) Professional Development Seminar
LRL promotes effective information retrievel techniques for legislative libraries. The Professional Development Seminar provides members a forum for the exchange of ideas relating to legislative information, operations and procedures in the states.

Legislative Education Staff Network (LESN) Fall Seminar
LESN is a two-day seminar held after the NCSL Fall Forum that offers legislative staff involved in education the opportunity to learn more about education policy issues from national experts as well as connect with other legislative staff from around the country.

Legal Services Staff Section (LSSS)
As the only national forum dedicated to the needs of legislative attorneys and other paralegal legislative staff, the LSSS offers training on topics that help legal services staff better serve their legislatures. LSSS members include all staff who are involved in bill drafting, code revision, legal research, statutory and administrative rule compilation and publication, litigation, editing and other legal services.

The purpose of  NALFO is to improve the quality and effectiveness of legislative fiscal staff and the services they provide to state legislatures.

As one of the nation’s 30,000 plus legislative staff, you are automatically a member of NCSL. NCSL is an organization of both legislators and legislative staff; staff play a key role in its governance. Three of the seven NCSL officers are legislative staff, and 20 legislative staff serve on the Executive Committee. In addition, staff serve along with legislators as members of the 12 Standing Committees of NCSL.

We offer a personal connection to NCSL and the nation's best policy experts. Your state has an NCSL staff liaison who will help you find the information you need, help you understand all the NCSL resources at your fingertips, and visit your state to meet with you.

Meetings, Seminars and e-Learning

NCSL sponsors a variety of meetings, seminars and workshops with legislative staff in mind. They offer valuable tips, training and forums to help you do your job and share your ideas with others.

 

State-Federal Relations

A key role of NCSL is to monitor federal policy and its effects on states. Standing Committees include legislators and legislative staff, and provide a unique opportunity to exchange information and experiences.
