Lennie Jarratt Offers Solution To Help Resolve Zion-Benton Strike

From the Jarratt for Senate (31st District) campaign…

(Round Lake, IL – January 8, 2011) Lennie Jarratt offers a solution in an effort to help resolve the Zion-Benton Teacher Strike after nearly 250 Zion-Benton residents, including many teachers, attended a townhall last night to discuss the ongoing strike.

This strike is hurting the community, the teachers and the most of all the students. Finals are being delayed, sporting events are being cancelled, and what should be good memories for the high school seniors are being lost forever.

This proposed salary is based off the last best offer of the Zion-Benton Board of Education offer, which was very generous at 10% over 3 years while also paying the full 10.375% pension. Final offers can be found at http://www2.illinois.gov/elrb/Pages/FinalOffers.aspx.

67% of new teachers leave their current school within the first 5 years while 27% leave teaching entirely and do not return. Pay is one of the leading causes of this attrition. By structuring the schedule (overview below) with the highest percent increases for those at the bottom, we are creating a fair wage system to help the most vulnerable teachers enabling them to remain in this most noble profession.

Salary Range in Schedule

Less Than $50,000 = 5.00% increase
Between $50,000 and $55,000 = 4.50% increase
Between $55,000 and $60,000 = 4.25% increase
Between $60,000 and $65,000 = 4.00% increase
Between $65,000 and $70,000 = 3.00% increase
Between $70,000 and $75,000 = 2.00% increase
Greater Than $75000 = 1.00% increase
