BACKGROUND: In 2008 the University of Pretoria Library Services was awarded a $1m grant by the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) to establish the Centre for African Library Leadership (CALL), within the Merensky Library. The CALL addresses the library leadership development needs within the South African LIS context by facilitating appropriate library leadership training and development programmes.

Following the success of the previous Carnegie Library Leadership Academies held in July 2009, in March and November 2010 and in March and November 2011 respectively, this Academy will be the sixth and final hosted over a period of three years. The Academy is designed to build leadership expertise in the academic, public/community and national libraries sectors. The programme focus is on best practices in library management, personal leadership and styles, advocacy and communication skills, organisational leadership, reconciliation and cultural integration in the workplace, introduction to Web 2.0 technologies, knowledge management, marketing and branding, etc.

**Please note** - STIPULATIONS OF THE ACADEMY

South Africans:

• All Academy expenses will be covered by the Carnegie grant
• Successful candidates will travel to Pretoria at their own cost
• Share double occupancy accommodation

Non-South Africans:

• All Academy expenses will be covered by the Carnegie grant
• All travel, visa and accommodation costs will be covered by the successful candidates
• Single occupancy accommodation

All successful candidates (both South African and non-South African), will comply with the requirements and adhere to the arrangements of the Academy from the initial selection to the completion of the Academy, including pre- and post-Academy projects.
 

• Degree in library and information science.
• Current employment in a senior or middle management position in an academic, public/community or national library service for at least 5 years
• LIASA membership: current paid-up member for 2012 (South African)
• Age eligibility: 30-50 years
• Willingness and ability to share what is learned with others in the profession
• Demonstrated commitment of participant’s home institution to support future development activities
• Excellent communication skills - ability to communicate well in both the spoken and written media, with a fluent command of English
• Willingness and ability to work as a team member
• Interest in current international library issues
• Commitment to attend the Academy in April 2012.

• Strong leadership potential and skills in the workplace, the profession or the community - evidence of this should be documented and substantiated in some way
• An articulated vision of how his/her participation in this Academy will contribute more widely to the development of the profession
• Commitment to the profession as demonstrated by participation in professional activities
• Knowledge of field of study and interest to engage effectively in, and derive benefit from, the academic as well as the practice-oriented content of the Academy
• Clarity of thought and presentation.

• The application form must be completed in English and should be typewritten for legibility.

3.    Two-paged curriculum vitae (CV), including educational background, professional experience, participation in professional activities, publications, information on participation in any other leadership programs, international experience and contact information

4.    Motivation statement, typewritten in English, in no more than 500 words and addressing the following topic:

Describe why you consider yourself a suitable candidate for the Academy and how your participation will help you achieve your professional goals, benefit your work and contribute to the development of librarianship.
