Western Mustangs: Men's Hockey (No. 3), Men's Volleyball (No. 6), Women's Swimming (No. 3), Women's Track & Field (No. 7), Men's Track & Field (No. 7)
LONDON, Ont. – Five Western Mustangs teams -- including men’s hockey, men’s volleyball, women’s swimming, and men’s and women’s track and field – found themselves ranked in the top 10 on Tuesday, as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) released its first 2012 edition of the weekly national sport rankings.
Western’s men’s hockey team remains at No. 3 in the country, trailing only McGill and UNB. The Mustangs (15-1-2) have already won twice in 2012,
beating Laurier 7-4 at home last Friday night, and
downing York 4-2 on the road on Saturday.
The Mustangs’ men’s volleyball team also held down its previous rank from Dec. 6, coming in at No. 6. Western (11-0) currently has the most wins in the nation and is one of only three unbeaten teams remaining in the CIS, along with Trinity Western (10-0) and Laval (10-0). The Mustangs opened 2012 with a pair of dominant victories at home,
3-0 over Ryerson on Friday night and
3-0 over Toronto on Saturday.
The women’s swimming rankings remained identical from the last CIS polls on Dec. 6, and Western came in at No. 3. The Mustangs lost a highly-competitive
dual meet in Toronto prior to the break.
New to the polls this edition is track and field, and both Western’s men’s and women’s teams come in this week at No. 7. At their
season opener meet, Mustangs track and field athletes combined for 42 medals overall.
