Laurentian Lady Vees @ Queen’s Gaels

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 13, 2012) - Brittany Moore of Hannon Ont. propelled the Gaels (6-5) to a 64-51 win over the Laurentian University Lady Vees (2-10), scoring 23 points on Friday night in Kingston.

Moore led all scorers with 23 points. She shot 8-10 from the line, and added three steals and three assists.  Meaghan MacDougall of Martintown, Ont. contributed a game high five assists in the win for Queen's. The Lady Vees were led by Emma Decloe of Sundridge, Ont. who had a team high 13 points as well as four rebounds.

The Gaels had a great first quarter, building up a 21-10 lead capping off the period with a last second basket from Kingston native Jenny Wright. The Gaels spent the second and third quarters fending off the Laurentian offense, being outscored in both quarters. The last frame was all Gaels as they put up 19 points to the Lady Vees 13.

With the win the Gaels move one game above the .500 mark putting them in fourth place in the OUA East division at 6-5.

York Lions @ RMC Paladins

Llyandra Kerr tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the York University Lions women's basketball team to a 54-40 victory over the RMC Paladins in Kingston, Ont., on Friday night (Jan. 13).

Kerr, a second-year forward from Markham, Ont., led the Lions in both categories and picked up five of her rebounds on the offensive end of the floor.

Teammates Brittany Szockyj (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) and Nadia Qahwash (Kitchener, Ont.) tallied 12 points each. Szockyj, a fifth-year guard and the team captain, also added eight rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Qahwash, a third-year guard, recorded four rebounds and five steals.

The win moved the Lions back up to .500 with an even 6-6 record and into a tie for fourth place in the OUA East standings with the Queen's Gaels. The Paladins remain winless on the season.

Despite their record, the Paladins came flying out of the gates while the Lions struggled to find their rhythm early, and RMC held a 17-8 advantage after the first quarter of play. But the Lions slowly started to chip away at the lead and were down by three at the half, 28-25.

The Lions continued to climb out of the whole they dug themselves in the first quarter and finally took the lead in the third to hold a one-point advantage heading into the final frame. They had their best defensive effort of the night in the fourth, holding the Paladins to just nine points, to earn the victory.

Sandy Edmison was the top player at both ends of the floor. She led all players with 17 points and accounted for more than 50 per cent of RMC's rebounds, pulling down 25.

Ottawa Gee-Gees @ Toronto Varsity Blues

Ottawa pulled away after a closely contested first half to defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues by a final score of 69-56 Friday night in Toronto. The win puts some distance between the first-place Gee-Gees and the second and third-placed teams in the division, Carleton and Toronto, as Carleton lost to Ryerson on Friday.

The teams were evenly matched in the early going and both squads were shooting well, especially from deep. Ottawa was able to establish a transition offense late in the first quarter. Getting points off Toronto turnovers and creating good penetration opportunities, the Gee-Gees held a 19-13 advantage after the first quarter.

Toronto got to the line frequently in the second quarter, while Ottawa struggled to hold on to the ball on the offensive end. The physical Sherri Pierce put the Varsity Blues ahead from the free-throw stripe midway through the quarter, and the Toronto defense forced the Gee-Gees to operate on the perimeter for much of the second. Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) carried the Gee-Gees on offense in the frame; she had 12 points in the first half.   “Their guards hurt us in the first half, but we made the adjustment and did a better job on them in the second half,” noted Gee-Gees bench boss Andy Sparks. “It was a little streaky, but we had a very good second half and a lot of positives.”

Ottawa seemed to come out of the locker room with renewed focus and energy. The starting five quickly put the Gee-Gees back in the lead by starting the third quarter with quick, crisp passing and good movement on offense. The Gee-Gees also played much cleaner defense in the second half as the Blues only got to the line twice after drawing 16 free throws in the first half.

The Gee-Gees used a balanced scoring attack to build and maintain their lead; Lennox led all players with 16, Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) finished with 14 points, and Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.), Teddi Firmi-Kuehn (Kitchener, Ont.), and Tatiana Hanlan (Gatineau, Qué.) each scored nine points.

Carleton Ravens @ Ryerson Rams

TORONTO- Veteran Angela Tilk had a game-high 24 points while adding a dominant 15 rebounds, leading the Ryerson Rams women's basketball team to their biggest victory of the season, defeating the CIS No. 4-ranked Carleton Ravens 65-54 at Kerr Hall Gym on Friday night.

"I'm happy we got the win," said Head Coach Charles Kissi. "It's only one (win but) I'm really happy they responded to a week of practice."

Tilk picked up nine offensive rebounds while going 9-of-19 from the floor to record her fourth double-double of the season and second in the last three contests.

"Angela had a great game," said Kissi. "She made her presence be known and she's been playing like that over the last three weeks. I was also glad that (Ashley) MacDonald didn't have to do everything."

The victory moves the Rams (5-6) within one win of the .500 mark, while the Ravens fall to 7-4 on the year.

Two buckets by Kelsey Wright (Brampton, Ont.) helped give the Rams an 8-4 advantage midway through the first, and the women were tough on the defensive side, forcing six turnovers in the quarter alone.

Chloe Mago (Scarborough, Ont.) spread the lead with a strong penetration to the basket, where she picked up two points and the harm to make it a three-point play. A lay-up by Annie Sokoloff (North Vancouver, BC) on a nice pass by MacDonald was followed by a bucket from Tilk after she recovered her own rebound, and Ryerson used a 7-0 run to take a double-digit lead.

Elizabeth Roach nailed a three soon after to end the Rams' streak, but Ryerson still held a 19-12 advantage going into the second period.

MacDonald (Port Colborne, Ont.) hit a long-ranger less than two minutes into the second, but Roach responded with another basket from beyond the arc as the Ravens quickly drew within four, prompting a timeout from Kissi.

Tilk (Welland,Ont.) and Kenesha Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg) drained lay-ups on back-to-back possessions to maintain the Rams lead, and the Ravens were struggling from the foul line, missing their first seven free-throws of the contest.

The No. 4-ranked squad was still able to cut the Rams lead down to six on a buzzer-beater three-pointer by Krista Slingerland. Ryerson held a 32-26 lead going into the locker rooms.

Tilk led both squads with eight points and seven boards through two quarters of play, while Alyson Bush had a team-high seven points on 3-of-3 shooting for Carleton.

The fourth-year forward remained hot to begin the second half, scoring four-straight points. Tilk then picked up a hard-fought rebound, and kicked it out to MacDonald who sank a three to push the lead up to 10 points at the 4:02 mark of the period.

The Ravens came out of the ensuing timeout to put higher-court pressure on Ryerson's possessions. The strategy paid dividends, as they were able to quickly cut the lead in half while forcing four Rams turnovers in under two minutes.

The momentum began to swing as two more turnovers by the women were converted into five points by Ashley Cleary, and what was once a 40-30 lead quickly became a one-point advantage.

Roach gave the Ravens the advantage to complete the 11-0 run, but the Rams came to life again on another two points by Tilk followed by three-point play by MacDonald to end a wild third quarter. The Ryerson still managed to hold a 45-43 lead heading into the final period.

Tilk continued her dominance in the post, sinking her team's first four points in the fourth. She then nailed her 21st point on the next possession, and another lay-up by Wright had the women up by eight with six minutes left in regulation.

Tilk extended the lead to double-digits with, and the Ravens were beginning to run out of time. Carleton sunk three-of-four free throws with just under three minutes to go, and Kissi called timeout to prepare his team for the last minutes of the contest.

With the game at 58-50 in favour of Ryerson, Tilk's game finally came to a close as she fouled out with 2:05 on the clock. The women stayed strong on defense, not allowing any free shots, and after a missed shot, MacDonald took the ball down the floor and gave the Rams a 10-point lead once again. She ended the game with 15 points and two steals, while Wright and Giles added seven and six points.

"Everybody contributed and we had a good team game," said Kissi.

Slingerland and Clearly dropped 13 and 10 points respectively in a losing cause for Carleton, who will head across the city for match-up with Toronto tomorrow night.

Lakehead Thunderwolves @ Laurier Golden Hawks

WATERLOO, Ont. (January 13, 2012) - Felicia Mazerolle of Elliot Lake, Ont., poured in 18 points while Doreen Bonsu of Oakville, Ont., had her second double-double of the season as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (8-3) defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves (6-5) by a score of 66-51 Friday night.

The win is the Hawks fourth in a row and helps them keep pace with the Brock Badger and the Windsor Lancers, who both lead the OUA West with a record of 10-2.

Both teams started the game off slow but the Hawks managed to grab an 11-10 lead after the opening quarter. While the game remained close through the second quarter, the purple and gold were able to stretch their lead to six and take a 31-25 advantage into the half.

After the Thunderwolves erased the Laurier lead just a minute into the third quarter, the Hawks responded and increased their lead to 10 after 30 minutes. Lakehead would get no closer in the fourth as the Hawks tough defence frustrated the Thunderwolves shooters and helped them earn the 66-51 victory.

Mazerolle, who led all scorers with 18 points despite shooting just 5-of-16 from the floor, managed to make all eight of her free throws in the contest. The Hawks free throw shooting proved to be a key factor in the victory as they finished 22-of-26 (84.6 percent) from the charity stripe while the Thunderwolves were just 5-of-7 (71.4 percent).

"She's [Mazerolle] a tough person to play against if youre the opposing point guard because you dont know what to expect," said Laurier Head Coach Paul Falco of his second year guard. "She's so quick and she moves her feet so well. She can be in one place and be in a totally different place one second later."

As for Bonsu, she contributed 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Kimberley Yeldon of Ottawa, also finished in double digits with 16 points.

Lindsay Druery of Smithville, Ont., was the Thunderwolves top player in the game with 15 points and nine rebounds.

"Lakehead is the best team at playing back-to-backs because they do it every weekend," continued Falco. "It's going to be interesting to see how we do because were young and we haven't been through that a lot. If we can win this one [Saturday's game], it gives us some separation from them and keeps us in touch with the two teams ahead of us."

Windsor outrebounded the Badgers 48-27, and shot 31-for-69 (44.9%).

Fifteen short hours later, the Lancers took to the court again to face the McMaster Marauders at Burridge Gym.

Tied early on in the first quarter, the Lancers would take their first lead of the game with a lay-up from Clemencon to make it 6-4. By the half way mark through the first, the Marauders would take a four point lead with shots from just instead the arc.

After going a whole three minutes with no scoring from either team with stellar defence from both squads, Windsor’s Korissa Williams would break the scoreless bout with a three-pointer at the top of the key. A jump shot and a lay-up from Clemencon would follow shortly after for the Lancers to take the lead 13-10.

The score at the end of the first quarter would read 18-10 as Windsor shut out the Marauders for the final five minutes of the first.

Once again, McMaster would open up the scoring with a three-pointer to get the Marauders back on the board. The defending national champions would then go on a scoring torrent, going ahead by nine at 24-15.

After another two minute of no scoring on either end of the court, Clemencon would force the foul and make the shot for the Lancers to take their first double-digit lead of the game at 27-17.

The Lancers held a 34-21 lead at the half, with Clemencon chipping in 13 of her game high 25 points in the half.

Carleton Ravens @ Toronto Varsity Blues

The Carleton University Ravens women’s basketball team had to go the distance to overcome the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on the road Saturday night, taking a narrow 71-67 victory.

With both teams having the same 7-4 record heading in to the game, second place in the OUA East was up for grabs.

The Ravens suffered an early blow as the Varsity Blues rushed out to an 11-6 lead midway through the first quarter. But the Ravens were able to limit the Varsity Blues’ efficiency in the paint to tie the game at 14 by the end of the quarter.

With the tit for tat game now firmly in place, both teams traded baskets as they tried to establish their dominance. Only through the fine shooting of Alyson Bush (Ottawa) were the Ravens able to hold a slender one-point lead heading into the half.

Three different players would sink shots from outside the arc in the third quarter as Carleton started to pull ahead.

It all came down to a nail-biting final as both teams went the full quarter desperately searching for the knockout blow.

The Ravens strong rebounding skills – they had 50 all game – would pay off, as Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) grabbed the defensive rebound to set up a basket by Bush, giving Carleton a 69-67 lead in the dying seconds.

Carleton’s ruthlessness from the line would seal the win as Bush and Jessica Resch (Ottawa) hit foul shots to put the game out of reach.

Cleary and Kendall MacLeod (Brockville, Ont.) both finished with a double-double. Cleary shot a game-high 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while MacLeod had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Having defeated Toronto, the attention will now turn to Wednesday, Jan. 18, when Carleton looks to put a dent in the uOttawa Gee-Gees’ OUA East title dreams.

Ottawa Gee-Gees @ Ryerson Rams

uOttawa took a strong grip on the game in the early going and maintained a comfortable lead throughout as they defeated the Ryerson Rams 76-64 in Toronto on Saturday. The win is the tenth in a row for the first-place Gee-Gees.

"We made it through that one,” commented head coach Andy Sparks. He continued, “Our execution was a little lax at times and they are an exceptionally hard working team. They scrapped with us and they didn’t quit when they were down twenty.”

Ottawa’s defensive efforts staked them to their lead as they swarmed the Rams in the first quarter with good help defense and man-to-man pressure. The Gee-Gees were actively jumping the passing lanes for steals and collected points in bunches in transition.

Ryerson drew within 11 in the third, but the Gee-Gees answered by finding Jenna Gilbert (Ottawa, Ont.) spotted up in the corner and she was able to hit several long range shots to extend the Gees’ lead back to 19 at the end of the quarter. Gilbert finished with 16 points.

Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.) led the way for the Gee-Gees, matching her season high of 18 points. Ring shot 3-3 from long range and was also a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line. Ryerson’s fourth year forward Angela Tilk had her second straight twenty-point game, registering 23 points in the losing effort.

When asked how the two weekend wins will impact the team’s overall confidence, Coach Sparks had this to say; “We keep the same approach every game and try not to focus on what’s down the road, but if we continue to get better we could do something special.”

The Gee-Gees can now truly turn their attention to the midweek showdown with second-place Carleton at the Capital Hoops Classic this Wednesday night at Scotiabank Place.

Lakehead Thunderwolves @ Laurier Golden Hawks

The women's basketball team salvaged a weekend split against the Laurier Golden Hawks, winning 65-61 and thus keeping them nipping at the Hawks' heels in the OUA West standings.

Halftime score was 36-26 Lakehead. The lead did get as large as 14 (36-22) with 2:00 remaining in the first half, but Laurier finished the first half with a few defensive stops, combined with some offensive rebounds that cut into what would have been a more comfortable cushion for the 'Wolves. In the end it would not matter, as Lakehead played enough defense down the stretch and put together a balanced attack from their veterans.

Carolyn Fragale led all scorers with 16 points (3/6 from three), followed by Lacey McNulty with 15 and Lindsay Druery with 14 - the two posts also grabbed 8 rebounds each. Ayse Kalkan chipped in 12 on 4/6 shooting from the field and 3/3 from the foul line.

The leading Golden Hawk was Felicia Mazerolle with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Jon Kreiner on the win: "Tonight we played with heart. We came out strong, executed our game plan and did a great job when Laurier countered with runs of their own. I am really proud at how hard our players worked tonight. This was a big game and I haven't seen a team I've coached at LU be more ready and driven to win."

The women play next at home versus McMaster for a weekend series Jan 20-21.
