"Blitz" Games That Will Never Be Made

With a new NFL Blitz game coming out this week, we decided to point out some sports that will probably never be transformed into hard-hitting arcade-style smashfests. Come with us, won't you?

First there was NBA Jam, and it was good. Then there was NFL Blitz, and it was even better. Midway's arcade sports games tossed out the stats and simulations in favor of wild action, with crazy plays and over-the-top effects. Midway would go on to apply the formula to baseball with MLB Slugfest and hockey with 2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge, but it was Blitz that remained the jewel in the crown. With a new NFL Blitz game hitting consoles last week, we decided to look at some sports that will probably never get the Blitz treatment.

Soccer

Soccer is a huge sport on the international market, but giving it the Blitz treatment wouldn't work for a variety of reasons. Fast-paced arcade games rely on lots of scoring and lots of turnovers to keep things interesting, and soccer can't really deliver that. It's telling that one of the most popular soccer video games of all time is called Sensible Soccer, which is pretty much the antithesis of the Blitz formula. So we wouldn't expect footy to get a game anytime soon, unless you play as a drunken, brawling fan.

Polo

On the surface, the game of polo seems like it might lend itself well to a cracked-out arcade experience. Four-man teams, each riding a horse and armed with a mallet, try to knock a ball into their opponent's goal. With plenty of action and built-in weapons, it looks like a Blitz game waiting to happen. But there's just one problem: nobody wants to play a video game where you hit a horse in the face with a hammer. We like horses too much. If you took the horses out of the equation and just had dudes hitting each other with sticks - well, you'd have hockey. And that's fine.

Golf

Golf

Let's just be honest with each other here: no matter how many skanky broads Tiger Woods bangs, the sport of golf is going to be an activity for old men until the end of time. Bad fashion, slow-paced play and no interaction between players aside from trash-talking at the tee (and even that's frowned upon) make for a game that's not very Blitzworthy. People have tried to make more arcade-style golf games, usually with over-the-top characters and special moves, but at the end of the day you're still putting a little white ball into a hole in the ground.

Figure Skating

Figure Skating

Figure Skating - you know, the "sport" for girls. Nobody's denigrating the amazing physical condition that figure skaters have to be in, but let's be frank: watching dweebs spin around to lousy music doesn't become magical just because there's ice under their feet. Figure skating is one of the least Blitz-style sports there is - competitors never share the ice, for one thing, removing the possibility of enraged throat-slittings. I'm sure you could do some fruity Kinect game, but it wouldn't be the same.

Badminton

Badminton

I could see tennis getting a Blitz makeover, but there's something so nonthreatening about badminton that it could never be crazy enough. Instead of whacking hard fuzzy balls over a waist-high net, badminton lets players gently thwack a funny-looking "birdie" over a high net. The very physical nature of the game means that the pace is slow and there's no opportunities for the kind of showy shots that get crowds going crazy. A general rule is that if you can play it on your lawn, you can't Blitz it.

Soccer Got The Blitz Treatment

It was called FIFA Street Soccer . It is currently up to the 4th in the series. Its pretty hard to miss but your research is crap (which is hard to **** up have you heard of Google ????). Anyway nice try but screwing up first up makes the rest of the article useless. From Ric The Real Stooge Owner And Creator Of Dailystooge.com WELCOME TO THE STOOGE REVOLUTION

soccer

Not sure about how you are equating Soccer with cup stacking and chess on here. You seem to not have noticed the successful (for a soccer game in the US) FIFA Street games. While not quite Blitz its close and similar elements could indeed be introduced. Plus its a game, you can have it be as high scoring as you please. Not to mention the super fun and sometimes brutal Mario Super Strikers.
