We practice a classical style of Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu based on the Shorin Ryu style founded by Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura originating from the islands of Okinawa (now part of Japan).
The classes run twice a week at the Western Student Recreation Center (WSRC): Monday from 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. and Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. We have open practice Sundays from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Any UWO student is welcome to join our club, and no previous experience in karate is required to start. The registration fee for one term is $72.50 (+ HST) and for the full year (fall/winter terms) is $130 (+HST). Students can
register online or in person at the WSRC - Membership Services.
By learning karate, students learn self-control and confidence to defend themselves, and improve their fitness and health. Hanshi Gary Legacy is the head of Legacy Shorin Ryu, while Shihan Wayne Baer is the head of our Western dojo and leads our classes with the aid of Sensei Robert Hudson. Our instructors teach us not just karate but the history of our style, courtesy, and healthy lifestyle. Classes include basic karate instruction, kata (or "forms"), sparring (kumite), self-defense forms, and traditional Okinawan weapons.
One advantage of joining the Western`s Karate Club is that members become part of Legacy Shorin Ryu and can practice at any of the other 11 Dojos within Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu. The locations and the other general information of our style can be found at Hanshi Legacy’s website (
www.shorinryu.ca).
