Feb. 25: Day 2 CIS Swimming National Championships, University of Calgary Aquatic Centre
CALGARY -
Bryn Jones won a silver medal in the men's 200-metre backstroke with a time of 2:12.46 at the 2011 CIS Swimming Championships at the University of Calgary Aquatic Centre on Friday night.
The Western Mustangs women sit in seventh spot with 120 points while the men are in 12th with 83 points.
Hayley Nell swam the fourth-fastest time in the women's 50-metre freestyle at 25.64 as the top women's finisher.
Action continues on the third and final day on Saturday Feb. 26 with preliminary races at 12 p.m. EST and finals beginning again at 8 p.m. EST.
Western Mustangs swimming head coach Paul Midgley said while he is disappointed with the overall team results, he's pleased with individual performances - in particular Jones' silver-medal performance.
"I was very pleased with that race, he's had a rough season recovering from H1N1 last year; it's been a long process," Midgley said. "It was very nice to see him pull out a couple of very nice swims this week."
The Nell sisters combined for solid performances on Day 2 and have worked together to account for many of the Mustangs points over the past 48 hours.
"Hayley is finishing up in year four and Shannon is just starting. Both are having strong seasons, and we're a little disappointed for Hayley that she did not medal, and Shannon, for a rookie, has put together some very strong performances this weekend."
Midgley admitted he was disappointed in the Mustangs position in the standings, but is optimistic for a better third and final day.
"I wish we were a little higher in the standings, particularly in the guys," Midgley said. "Some years it just depends on how the potions break. This year it looks like the best we'll be is sixth in the women's and maybe just crack the Top 10 in the men's. But in terms of some of the individual level finishes, I am quite pleased."
