Name That Flash Artist!

Every Monday, I will be sharing four panels featuring a comic book character. They will each be drawn by four separate pencilers. I will be featuring only pieces of art where the penciler did full pencils (as otherwise it would be way too difficult). Your challenge is to, simply put, name that artist!

E-mail me your guesses to bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Do NOT make guesses in the comments section! When I post the new challenge, I’ll post the correct answers for the previous on the archive page along with whoever guessed them correctly. You don’t have to name the issues the panels came from, but if you’d like to, knock yourself out.

Read on for the four Flash (Barry Allen) panels…

She Has No Head! – Bests (and a few Worsts) of 2011

So…Greg Burgas gets grouchy when we post “Best of Lists” before ALL THE COMICS HAVE COME OUT.  I tend to not agree because the reality is that if I missed it by the last week of December, or didn’t get it yet, I’m probably not going to have time to read it with all the chaos of the holidays and end of the year.  But I capitulated to Greg’s demands this year, and so here we are, January 2nd, with my Bests of 2011 (and a few worsts).

Please keep in mind as always that I didn’t get to read ALL THE BOOKS.  A handful of books are sitting on my shelf just begging to be read (last year’s The Return of The Dapper Men is this year’s Habibi), and they might have all been contenders, not to mention all the books that I didn’t read that aren’t sitting on my shelf and won’t be read for ages.  They all might have been possibles…but unlike our fearless leader Brian Cronin…I can never manage to read all the books (I don’t know how he does it).  I would say my most notable and glaring holes come from being behind on DMZ, Scalped, and Daredevil, all of which I like, and all of which I suspect might have made things tough for other books…but which I’m just not current enough on to include.  Of what I DID read, here’s what I really loved the most…

The Abandoned An’ Forsaked – Magneto is a Gypsy?

All throughout December, we will be examining comic book stories and ideas that were not only abandoned, but also had the stories/plots specifically “overturned” by a later writer (as if they were a legal precedent). Click here for an archive of all the previous editions of The Abandoned An’ Forsaked. Feel free to e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com if you have any suggestions for future editions of this feature.

Today, we look at Magneto’s gypsy history.

Comic Theme Time Month – Best Time Travel Storyline

All December long, I will be doing daily installments of Comic Theme Time. Comic Theme Time is a twist on the idea of a “Top Five” list. Instead of me stating a topic and then listing my top five choices in that topic, I’m giving you the topic and letting you go wild with examples that you think fit the theme.

Today’s topic is a straightforward one – “what is the best comic book time travel storyline?”

Superman’s “Time and Time Again?” The West Coast Avengers traveling through time? Swamp Thing’s journey through time? Iron Man versus Doctor Doom in Camelot? Any of the various Fantastic Four time travel stories? There are tons of choices – what are your picks?

About Next Year’s Weekly Features…

Okay, five of the six new features have been chosen.

Things were close enough for the last feature that I’ll let you folks decide all on your own who gets the last spot between five choices. I am pretty sure that the schedule is such that whichever one gets picked won’t show up until next week, so I’ll give y’all a few days to vote.

Do note that just because something is not a weekly feature does not mean that it won’t return period – it just won’t be a weekly thing, that’s all.

So here are the choices for the last feature…

Which of these monthly features from 2011 would you most like to see become a weekly feature in 2012?

Dan Slott’s Greatest Dan Slott Stories Ever Told!

Dan Slott was nice enough to share with fans on Formspring his personal choices for his Top 10 greatest stories ever told. I asked Dan if I could share his list with you folks here, and he said, “Sure,” so here ya go – Dan Slott’s personal picks for the Greatest Dan Slott Stories Ever Told (with commentary on each of the stories by me)!

The Abandoned An’ Forsaked – So Who is Magma After All?

All throughout December, we will be examining comic book stories and ideas that were not only abandoned, but also had the stories/plots specifically “overturned” by a later writer (as if they were a legal precedent). Feel free to e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com if you have any suggestions for future editions of this feature.

Today, based on a suggestion from reader Paulo A., we take a look at the strange history of the New Mutant known as Magma…

Comic Theme Time Month – Who is the Single Best Superhero Supporting Cast Member?

All December long, I will be doing daily installments of Comic Theme Time. Comic Theme Time is a twist on the idea of a “Top Five” list. Instead of me stating a topic and then listing my top five choices in that topic, I’m giving you the topic and letting you go wild with examples that you think fit the theme.

Today’s topic is a complicated one.

What I want you to do is to come up with the single best supporting character for various superheroes, like who is the best supporting character for Batman – Gordon or Alfred? Or Catwoman (crimefighting partners don’t count)? Who is the best Spider-Man supporting character? Mary Jane, Aunt May or JJJ? Once you’ve determined who THE best supporting characters are for each of those heroes, then rank your top five supporting characters.

Essentially, this is a way that someone like Foggy Nelson can compete. He is likely never going to be in the top five of a supporting cast list, not with characters like Lois Lane, Alfred, JJJ, Aunt May, Gordon, Jimmy Olsen and Mary Jane to compete with – but if he’s only competing with the top supporting character for each of those other heroes, maybe he IS in the top five!

Saturday in Lincoln City (Despite Parental Warnings)

This is the concluding installment of the tale of our recent excursion to the Oregon coast; a place that we discovered is much better bookscouting– and comics-friendly– territory than one might suppose. Part one is here, and part two lies below the fold. Continue Reading »

House to Astonish Episode 75

Happy New Year (Nearly)! It’s our end-of-2011 wrap-up episode, with a special guest in the form of games blogger (and friend of the podcast) Cara Ellison. We’re talking about the big news stories of the year, such as the New 52, the new Ultimate Spider-Man, the closure of Wizard and the future of digital distribution. We’re also running through a few of the comics that have caught our fancy this year, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe is puttin’ on the Ritz. All this plus super-heroes drinking their own pee, how the Hulk takes care of boiled eggs and a tiny little Sean Phillips living inside all of us.

The podcast is here, or here on Mixcloud. Or just click on the player below.

Let us know what you think, in the comments below, on Twitter (I’m @housetoastonish, Paul’s @ifdestroyed and Cara’s @carachan1), via email (we’re at housetoastonish@gmail.com) or on our Facebook fan page.
