Unleashed: Free and low-cost services for cats, kittens and pit bulls offered via Spay Neuter Express

d3.jpgWant a jumping-for-joy happy pit bull? Low-income families in Kent County can get their pit bull spayed or neutered, and up to date on shots, for just $20 through the Spay Neuter Express.

Low-income residents of Kent County who have been hesitant to get their cat or kitten "fixed" because they can't afford it, worry no more. Likewise for owners of pit bulls.

Dr. Bruce Langlois, who operates the Spay Neuter Express, is continuing his Inner City Kitties program through mid-November. Each Tuesday through Nov. 15, the mobile animal hospital will be parked at 1601 S. Madison in Grand Rapids and will offer free spay and neuter services for cats and kittens (at least 8 weeks old) owned by low-income residents of Kent County. The program is funded by donations to Vicky's Pet Connection.

Registration for Inner City Kitties takes place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays. The animals are released at 6 p.m. the same day, and the mobile unit can perform spay/neuter procedures on 75 cats per day. Cats should be in a secure carrier with a towel and adult cats should not have food or water overnight. Kittens less than 3 pounds can have a VERY small meal first thing in the morning.

Langlois, the owner and medical director of the Animal Hospital of Lowell, also is offering low-cost vaccines and spay and neuter for pit bulls owned by low-income residents of Kent County. The pit bull clinics, also done via the mobile unit at 1601 S Madison, are scheduled for the first three Fridays in November (Nov. 4, 11 and 18).

For just $20, male or female pit bulls or pit bull mixes will get a rabies vaccination, distempter/parvo/lepto/hepatitis/parainfluenza vaccination, and will be dewormed of parasites (many of which are contageous to people), along with getting spayed or neutered.

Again, adult dogs should fast overnight, and puppies younger than four months can have a small meal early in the morning. Registration will be 9-11 a.m., with discharge at 6 p.m.

Questions can be directed to Spay Neuter Express at 616-897-8865 or to spayneuterexpress@gmail.com.
