Red Wings in talks with NHL to host outdoor game within next two seasons

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings are in deep discussions with the NHL about hosting an outdoor game within the next two seasons.

MLive.com has learned the Red Wings expect to host the annual Winter Classic either next season or in 2013-14.

The Red Wings would prefer to have the game at Comerica Park, home of the Tigers, also owned by Mike Ilitch. But it might take place at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor due to its huge capacity.

The stadium hosted the "Big Chill at the Big House" on Dec. 11, 2010, attracting a world record announced crowd of 113,411 in the game between Michigan and Michigan State.

Detroit and New York are in line for the next two NHL outdoor games in the U.S.

Since the New York Rangers play in this season’s Winter Classic on Jan. 2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia against the Flyers, it stands to reason that Detroit would be the leading candidate to host next season’s game since the league is unlikely to have the same team (the Rangers) play in it two years in a row.

The Red Wings played in the 2009 Winter Classic at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, beating the Blackhawks 6-4.

A limited number of NHL cities in the U.S. can host these events due to climate. Buffalo, Chicago, Boston and Pittsburgh already have hosted outdoor games.

Minnesota and Columbus probably would be the only other places capable of hosting the Winter Classic, but it’s doubtful NBC would want to show the Wild or the Blue Jackets, who would not garner good enough TV ratings.

It's about time! My choices: Chicago (most logical, original 6, let the rancor begin already), Nashville (seems to compete well over the years in games vs. Wings), Boston (see last Friday, original 6), San Jose (maybe not mainstream enough), or Toronto (unlikely--they want two American teams).

The obvious choice would be Toronto. You may be right that they want two American teams. Please rule out the NHL fabricated rivals Columbus or Nashville. Among the best hockey towns who haven't already been overexposed in this event and would create a good TV draw, just leaves Boston, which I could live with.

What’s the impetus or misperceived reasoning behind these outdoor venues? The last one I watched was flooded with water and the ice was terrible. Ice hockey is a sport that should have a controlled environment. Slushy, puddled ice and wind makes for a silly, failed promotion of a game that needs no tweaking.

I agree with that. I sure wouldn't attend an outdoor hockey game. Yet I understand the NHLs reasoning for playing them. It is a business, they make big money off the games and they attract more fans to watch the games on tv.

Hockey is MEANT to be played outdoors!! The game was invented and perfected on frozen ponds. Ice problems are apart of the game, just as a terrible football field is apart of football! We should play outdoors every game!

Transportation was meant to be by horse. Does that mean we should get rid of our cars and go back to horse & buggy? People used to get their water by walking to the well, not by turning on a tap in the house. Indoor plumbing, email rather than writing letters,etc.etc. Times change and I doubt that you wuld have a hard time coming up with people that would agree that all games should be played outside.

meant to say I doubt that you would have an easy time finding people that agree with you.

For once we agree rightorwrong. Unless you have the BEST (probably a grand or more per) seats for that game I too would not waste my time/money. It is a nostalgic cash grab by the NHL.

Hey everyone will agree with most anyone else once in a while. I have even agreed with what you have written a few times. But I wouldn't admit it.

Transportation was meant to be by horse? Oh, come on now. Exploitation of any animal by man has an ethical conundrum. In any event, I love a good pond/lake hockey game, I even liked watching the local outdoor games that seemed to vanish with global warming. But in the NHL, these ballpark venues are too large for a small hockey rink, and the seating is terrible…you can’t see the action.

Do it at the Big House. I'd like to see them play either Boston, Toronto or Montreal, but a rematch with Chicago would be alright too.

It's about stinking time. I say forget the two U.S. teams, let's make it Detroit vs. Toronto in the Big House. Let's pack the place full for an Original Six matchup, and show Bettman what real hockey tradition is all about.

By all means, yes to both the location and the opponent. I can see pressure to hold it in downtown, which I wouldn't object to, but I'd prefer The Big House. Largest crowd to watch a hockey game? Big House. Largest crowd to watch an NHL game? Big House. Let's do it. Plus great end zone tv screens, except for when the power went out, which was just once.

I really think it should be Habs or Leafs in the winter classic with the Wings, do it at the big house and split everything evenly at 25% with the last 25% going to charities picked out by the three groups. I think you could even put together a package where the Big Chill happens again on the same weekend and you could make a weekend of it.
