One Dead After Plane Crashes in Neighborhood Near Opa-locka Airport

The pilot of a small plane that took off this morning from Opa-locka Executive Airport is believed to be dead after the aircraft crashed in a residential neighborhood. The plane hit two vehicles before eventually bursting into flames near a house. No other fatalities have been reported.

The plane, a Beech Aircraft BE 18 believed to have been built in the 1950s, was carrying cargo and on its way to the Bahamas. The pilot had reported some problems before taking off.

​Shortly after takeoff, the plane went down around the 14000 block of NW 41st Avenue and hit two vehicles. The impact flipped a van and crushed a car.

The plane eventually came to rest near a house. The two vehicles and the plane became engulfed in flames, but fire rescue teams were able to contain them quickly.

The family living in the house escaped.
