Yesterday via the MTV Geek Livestream at New York Comic Con, MTV Comics announced a new comic by J. Michael Straczynski, The Adventures of Apocalypse Al, which will be published online and on tablets and mobile devices in Spring 2012. It will then be released in stores worldwide by MTV Books.

The Adventures of Apocalypse Al marks the Eisner, Hugo, Eagle and Inkpot award-winner's first graphic novel to follow the New York Times best-selling Superman: Earth One. Originally developed as a radio serial for the CBC, Al was never released and has had fans wondering if it would ever see the light of day. "Joe and I have been discussing the property since sometime in 2007, and it's amazing to finally bring this series to fans." said MTV Comics' Tom Akel. JMS has described it as "Monty Python meets the Maltese Falcon en route to the end of the world."

Want to know who will be bringing you the next great comic created by Stan Lee...who isn’t Stan Lee? Wonder no more!

At last year’s New York Comic Con, we announced the launch of MTV Geek, the home of MTV Comics and a daily destination for the latest in comic books, games, animation, toys, sci-fi, fantasy, and more. Part of the announcement was that MTV would be teaming up with Stan Lee on the creation of an original new comic book, entitled The Seekers.

At the MTV Geek Comic Con panel in San Diego on August 23rd, Lee revealed the narrative treatment for the book, as well as the launch of the contest in which would-be scribes and illustrators will compete in a life changing contest for a chance to work directly with Lee in launching the new comic book. MTV is the destination at New York Comic Con this year for fun-filled panels on cutting-edge animation, darkly funny comedy...and even Stan Lee!

We kick things off with a panel on the upcoming MTV original animated series Good Vibes on Friday:

“Good Vibes” voice talent Adam Brody (“The OC”), Josh Gad (“Book of Mormon”), Debi Mazar (“Entourage”) and Olivia Thirlby (“Bored to Death”), along with creator David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express,” “Your Highness”) and executive producers Tom Brady and Brad Ableson (“The Simpsons”), and Mike Clements (“Life and Times of Tim,” “Are You There Vodka, It’s Me Chelsea”), will sit down with Baba Booey himself, Gary Dell'Abate, executive producer of “The Howard Stern Show” for the past 28 years, to discuss the new series. Fans will also be treated to the world premiere of the pilot episode during the panel, and it will be available in its entirety on MTV.com following the session. The “Good Vibes” panel will take place on Friday, October 14 at 10:45 a.m., in Room IA22, and the series premieres on MTV Thursday, October 27 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT.

As you’ve probably already heard, Simon Frasier’s (rather awesome) comic scifi series Lilly Mackenzie & The Mines Of Charybdis from webcomics collective ACT-I-VATE is hitting MTV Geek today. To find out more about it, including how he came up with the character, what’s coming up next, and why Lilly’s nudity isn’t the sort you’ll find popping up on celeb sites, read on!

MTV Geek: Okay, talk about the genesis of Lilly Mackenzie – how’d you come up with the idea?

Simon Frasier: It actually started with Cosmo, who's a character I've been drawing since I was at college. He used to be much smaller , about 6", a kind of Jiminy Cricket who gave bad advise to the story's young male lead, who was quite capable of having his own bad ideas.

The story is actually derived from something that happened to me while I was living in Tanzania back in the 90s. Without glorifying my role too much I helped rescue a 12 year old boy , the son of our housekeeper , who had been taken to work in a Tanzanite mine in Mererani. It was one of the most shocking experiences of my life as I've never seen human beings so debased.

There were hundreds of men there, sleeping on the dirt and literally scrabbling for anything they could find with their hands. Most of them were starving and painfully emaciated. The children were being used to go down narrow shafts because of their size. Meanwhile there were gemstone dealers living near the mine and paying the miners very tiny amounts of money for stones that were worth thousands of dollars. At one point I was worried that we'd be attacked, but happily we managed to find and bring the boy home to his mother. The experience was terrifying!

Writing the story down has been a way of processing that experience. I didn't want to do an autobiographical story, as that always ends up fictionalised in some way and I don't want to position myself as some kind of heroic protagonist when I was merely a tourist. Making it a fictional story was a way for me to deal with the subject in a creative way and Science Fiction is the genre I am happiest working in.

Lilly was the last piece of the puzzle. I wanted to write and draw a female protagonist. I like drawing women a lot, so I know I could make her look good, but I wasn't sure if I could write one convincingly. I'm still not. That has been the most challenging part of the process.

Geek: One of the things I like about it is the relatively casual tone – at least at first. It’s scifi, but it feels like that’s the backdrop to tell the story, rather than the focus.

SF: I wanted to world-build with the first Lilly story, create a universe that has certain specific rules. One of those is that space travel is difficult. Getting up into space is a dangerous process and getting down can be too. I find a lot of problems with how conventional mainstream science fiction has removed all the challenges of space-travel, which are what I find interesting. The drama for me is in the characters overcoming these massive physical obstacles using their brains and basic technology, not the magical Star Trek kind. The story is slow paced initially to build up a sense of what is normal as I don't want to fall back on the old laser blaster, teleporter, warp drive cliches that have become synonymous with TV and movie Sci-fi.

Have you ever dreamed of writing or illustrating a comic under the tutelage of the legendary Stan Lee? Well, here's your chance True Believer! MTV Comics and POW! Entertainment are offering you the chance to write or illustrate the digital graphic novel "The Seekers!"

Over the next 3 weeks we'll be accepting submissions from artists and writers for an opportunity to earn approximately $10,000.00 to do just that. You read that right, that's 10-Gs.

In order to enter you'll need to read the complete set of official rules, but here are the highlights of the contest:

● Submissions will be close on September 23, 2011
● ARTISTS will submit five (5) black and white pages of sequential comic art based on a scene from "The Seekers"
● WRITERS will write ten (10) pages of comic script and a two (2) page treatment for the series based on Stan's treatment
● Submissions will be narrowed down by the MTV Comics editorial staff to the top 20 semi-finalists in each category; that's 20 writers, and 20 artists
● Semi-finalists will be voted on by the public beginning on September 26, 2011
● The top 5 vote-getters in each category will be forwarded on to Stan Lee, who will hand select the winners
● Winners will be presented the opportunity to write or illustrate MTV Comics’ The Seekers (and earn approximately 10k)

Tanpopo – a so far three issue comic series by writer/artist Camilla d’Errico – is easily one of the most unique projects we’ve ever come across. Mixing text and plot from Goethe’s Faust, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and a centuries old supernatural story from China, with images straight out of Manga and Anime, as well as splashes of color, jumbled text and light, Tanpopo is as much a work of art as it is pop-literature.

But it is telling a story, albeit a very ambitious one: over ten issues d’Errico will take naïve young Tanpopo, team her up with The Devil, and reveal the entire gamut of human emotions. You know, simple stuff. To find out more, we chatted with d’Errico about all of this, where she draws her inspiration from, and what’s coming up with the next seven issues (which you'll be able to read here at MTV Geek!):

MTV Geek: Camilla, let’s talk about Tanpopo… For those who didn’t pick up your self published volume, what’s the general idea?

Camilla d'Errico: Tanpopo is a Faustian story. It’s a story about emotional discovery, and about our perceptions – usually misperceptions – of what is good and evil.

Geek: Who is Tanpopo?

CD: Tanpopo is a mysterious girl who feels no emotion. She is attached to a machine of knowledge. Superhumanly intelligent. Inhumanely emotionless. And one day she laments her state, her life and longs for emotion…

Geek: And who is Kuro?

CD: Enter Kuro. He is Faust’s devil. He hears Tanpopo’s lamentations and, disguised as Poodle, he goes to Tanpopo and releases her from her machine, promising that with his help, she will feel emotion. Read more...
