About MLive.com's profile pages (updated 12.08.09)

Published: Monday, August 31, 2009, 11:47 AM     Updated: Tuesday, December 08, 2009, 1:46 PM
Welcome to the MLive.com community tools Help page. Here you will find quick links explaining how to use your profile. It includes screenshots, a video, as well as a FAQ. Please express your thoughts on the profiles and functionality of MLive.com in the comments area below. If you are experiencing log in issues with forums or comments, please keep reading.

Update: Dec. 8, 2009

The number of complaints has dropped dramatically from what we can tell. There are a number of users who are reporting problems, but it's not nearly as widespread as it had been after the launch. On Dec. 3, 2009, we posted a FAQ for the most common problems.

We've also implemented better response systems for those who contact MLive about forum or comment problems. The responses usually come right from the FAQ, so be sure to mention in your email that you've already read the FAQ.

Numerous updates to the software are still being made. This includes more use of user profiles and a better "Success!" page after you've made a comment. Yes, we've heard the complaints that the result page is not worth it.

I will unpublish a number of the comments on this post again since they are piling up. Please continue to post any issues you may have. You can also email our Contact Us form.

Update: Oct. 27, 2009

Thanks for everyone who has left comments informing us about the difficulties you are seeing while logging into the site. My previous message stating that the majority of user account problems being solved seemed to be taken like a "Mission Accomplished" banner on an aircraft carrier. I apologize.

There are remaining user issues, and I received word today that 110,000 (from all of Advance Internet, not just MLive.com; a relatively small number taking into account the millions of active user accounts we host) user accounts that were "unexpectedly frozen" have now been freed.

...significant changes have been made to the forums in response to bugs reported by users. This included thawing over 110,000 users who were unexpectedly frozen during the data conversion process and tweaking the way forum users are cookied when they sign in. We are also auditing the forums and will be making further changes next week.

It appears from the latest comments that at least one user is now able to access an older account.

Also on the fix list is the comment order problem. So, now when you thread a comment it should show up in the proper location. (Correction, this will go live on Oct. 28 at 3 a.m.)

Finally, so you are aware of our process to your account problems, our developers are creating a FAQ document for common problems.(It's not ready yet, but it's being developed.) If you feel venting on the comments of this thread are enough, feel free to use our Contact Us page. Be sure to use the pull down menu and choose "MLive forums issue" - even if it's for a comment problem.

Woah my old profile works again! Success! Thank you for continuing to work at fixing these problems. I know we've been a vocal bunch. Now the option to get all comments on articles shown in blocks of a hundred or more and I'll be happy...

@glenvl, I'm guessing this is the Muskegon Opinion page? This has been fixed. Please include the URL of pages where you cannot comment. This is an easy fix.

Banning a post name for breaking the rules doesn't seem like a good idea, they just come back under another name. Better to leave them alone so you know who to avoid or skim over. Anyone can get a little carried away at times. Better to ban the petty deleters, I find them to be the real wet blankets.

@beetlebomb, Oh, there are other methods that are employed. Trust me.

You've speeded up the posting, yea.
Please show newer comments first.
I can't follow others according to the directions on FAQ page - I don't see 'follow this user' below the name on the profile page. Thanks for your help. Posting comments is fun!

My first comment, 'you've speeded up the posting' is already archaic. It takes forever for the screen to refresh each page because of all the advertising space and the time it takes to upload.
I figured out how to follow and now I want to UN follow and can't make it work.
Please help. Thank you.

I keep getting error messages about UTF-8 characters. What's up with that?

If you write a comment in Word and paste it into the comment window in Internet Explorer, the system will generate the following error: Invalid request: corrupt character data for character set UTF-8. Copying and pasting from Word carries with it a lot of invisible characters that our comment box doesn't recognize and won't allow. If this is the case, we recommend that you first save your Word document as "Text only," then copy and paste. Or, just type directly into the comment box.

Is there a way, or will there be a way soon, to send a private message to another user? If so, how?
