Privacy

Pages on the webservers dfat.gov.au, smartraveller.gov.au, passports.gov.au, foreignminister.gov.au, trademinister.gov.au, asis.gov.au, and embassy.gov.au (including their sub-domains) conform to the following privacy guidelines:

Http logs

We collect clickstream data in our logs. These logs are used internally to better develop the site and allow us to report on site activity. They are not used for any other purpose. When you visit this web site, we make a record of your visit and log the following information for statistical purposes:

  • the user's server address,
  • the user's top level domain name (for example .com, .gov, .au, .uk etc),
  • the date and time of visit to the site,
  • the pages accessed and documents downloaded,

No attempt will be made to identify users or their browsing activities except in the event of an investigation in which a law enforcement agency may exercise a warrant to inspect the logs.

Forms

If you use forms on the site to provide information, subscribe to lists, register travel details or purchase publications, the information you provide is not retained on the public web server and will not be used for other purposes.

We will not disclose your personal information to a third party except in the following circumstances, in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988, where:

  2. we believe on reasonable grounds that use of the information for another purpose is necessary to prevent or lessen a serious and imminent threat to the life or health of the individual concerned or another person;
  3. use of the information for that other purpose is required or authorised by or under law;
  4. use of the information for that other purpose is reasonably necessary for enforcement of the criminal law or of a law imposing a pecuniary penalty, or for the protection of the public revenue; or
  5. the purpose for which the information is used is directly related to the purpose for which the information was obtained.

Passport forms are secured using 40 or 128 bit certificates depending on your browser.

Cookies

A cookie is a small file that is sent to your web browser from a web server and stored on your computer's hard drive. Cookies set by our pages are only valid during the session.
