Sri Lanka played a key-role to admit Palestine to UNESCO at its biannual general conference on the 31st of last month and was commended by many a  member country for the act, Senior Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana said today.

The vote at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters which required approval by two-thirds of the agency’s General Conference, passed by a vote of 107 to 14, with 52 abstentions, he said.

The US who led the group of countries manly comprising western nations and Isrel, responded immediately by cutting her contribution of US$ 60 million for the month of November.

Apart from the US and Israel western nations such as Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany were among those voting no. A surprise yes vote came from France, Minister Vitharana added.

A majority of Non-Aligned nations from Asia, Africa and Ocenia voted for the resolution.

“Sri Lanka was prominent in its campaign for the Palestine course and launched a concerted effort to win the vote to admit Palestine as the newest member of  the UNESCO. Our diplomat in France and UNESCO, Mr. Dayan Jayatilaka carried out a successful canvassing among many member states and was able to persuade them to vote ‘yes’,” Minister Vitharana said. (Sandun A. Israel is a silent super power and they do not ignore their enemies lightly, We are a small anchovy and we should know our limit when dealing with super powers. We are trying to solve global issues while we cannot even solve our own problems.

Prof. Vitharana, have you ever read the book called the Holy Bible? This book, sir was written by holy men of God by the inspiration of God's Holy Spirit. This is not science that I am quoting but what is also written in the Bible, that "no Prophecy orscripture is of any private interpretation, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit of God" - II Peter, verses 20 and 21. Also, read II Tim. 3:16. Then read the whole Book of Genesis.

Then you will get a fair idea of WHO is Israel, WHAT is the land of Israel and WHY Israel will NEVER just "go away".

You are a erudite; take a little time to also read I Cor. 1: 18 onwards, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise: and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent".

Kumaraya, you can't always live in history but match with current situations and necessities. If you really need to bounce back to hitory then, perhaps, at least could go back to the recent history which 1967 agreement between Palastine and Isreal had come into.

Amarapala, the Bible is NOT a history book! It is God's written word. If YOU want to dwell in history, where you ask me to go to the 1967 borders, I will respectfully suggest that you go back on "history" 4000 years, to the time Abraham was called by God and sent to Israel. You can also dwell in the history of Israel, through their captivity and subjugation in Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, Rome and finally under Turkish and British rule. YET, Israel stands and is established "for ever".

The Lord said, "Heaven and earth shall pass awy but My word shall not, by any means passaway".

DM pls publish this comment! - @Kumaraya I'm not an Muslim nor a Christian, not having any religion for that matter. What I can say is that your comments are absurd. You are a clear example how religions have exaggerated the problems in the world and made it into the horrible circumstances it's in today.

as usual our Sri Lankan are always, way too early to conclude. The news i'm being updated from Paris revealed " Well constructive force from Palestine was behind their victory, the power of it , the France itself compelled to vote "YES" for them. As a nation we just votes YES nothing else....Prof and Dayan had seen with Isreal delegation in Paris playing double games. Foolish liers!!!! Truth will come out soon.
