Strategic Asia Database

UPGRADED AND UPDATED!

The Strategic Asia database contains data for all 37 countries in “Strategic Asia” across 70 indicators arranged in ten broad thematic areas: economy, finance, trade and investment, government spending, population, energy and the environment, communications and transportation, armed forces, nuclear arms, and politics. The database is a repository of authoritative data for 1990 to 2009.

New this year, the database’s public interface has been upgraded and now includes a visual mapping feature that tracks current Asian military developments, including the location of military assets, international exercises, and peacekeeping operations. Currently, maps have been generated for Chinese and Japanese forces, and more Asian countries will be added in the future. The Strategic Asia database was developed with .NET, Microsoft’s XML-based platform, which allows users to link dynamically to all or part of the Strategic Asia data set and facilitates easy data sharing. The database also includes additional links that allow users to access related online resources seamlessly.

Access Asia Search

AccessAsia is a free online search resource that focuses solely on contemporary Asian affairs. One of NBR’s longest running projects, since 1990 AccessAsia has tracked thousands of specialists on current Asian affairs. Originally a database on Asian affairs experts, AccessAsia is now a specialized search engine with thousands of links to Asian affairs experts’ websites. These experts’ specializations range from Japan to Afghanistan and Russia to Australia, and their work includes foreign policy, security, economics, domestic politics, and energy.
