Having trouble identifying generic pills and capsules without their original packaging or from an old prescription? Now you can quickly identify drugs and medications using the RxList Pill Identifier Tool.

Enter the shape, color or imprint of your prescription drug, vitamin or medication. Review the images of pills to identify your drug or medicine.

Identify Your Pill or Medication

The imprint is the letters, numbers or other markings on the pill, tablet or capsule.  
If there are different markings on the front of back, try entering just one side.  If you want to enter both, separate them with by using the symbol * (ie: Lupin*10)
If your medication has more than one color, select the color that is most prominent (If neither is more prominent, select either color).

If the shape of your pill does not identically match one of the shapes displayed, select the one that it most closely resembles.  If none of the shapes displayed match yours, select "Other."

How To Use the RxList Pill Identifier/Pill Finder Tool

To accurately identify the pill, drug or medication, you can do any of the following steps using our pill identifier tool.

  • Enter the imprint code displayed on the medication, (example the numbers and/or the letters on the side of the pill or tablet).
  • Select the color of the pill in the pull-down menu above.
  • Select the shape of the pill in the pull-down menu above.

Once you've found a drug id match, you'll be able to link to a detailed description, drug picture, and images in our comprehensive RxList Drug Database. You can also use the drug pictures to help identify pills.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the three types of drugs that are misused or abused most often are:

  • Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants – prescribed for anxiety or sleep problems (also called sedatives or tranquilizers)
  • Stimulants – prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy, and obesity
