Tabloid journalists could give anonymous evidence to Leveson Inquiry

Posted by Press Gazette on 21 October 2011 at 10:53

Tabloids journalists could get the chance to submit evidence to the Leveson Inquiry anonymously.

According to The Guardian, Leveson wants “key journalists”, including undercover former News of the World reporter Mazher Mahmood, to give evidence about working practices at tabloid newspapers.

Today’s report said:

The inquiry panel sees anonymous evidence as a way to uncover a true picture of life at Britain’s tabloid newspapers, after it was criticised for not including an expert adviser with experience at one of the red-top titles.

Leveson has the power to summon key journalists to give evidence under oath if other avenues have been exhausted. However, he has previously distanced himself from using this tactic.

A handful of journalists from each of the tabloids are understood to have already expressed an interest in assisting the inquiry.

Cameron: Leveson Inquiry is no threat to press freedom

Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday insisted the Leveson Inquiry into phone-hacking and media standards was not a “hideous threat” to press freedom.

Cameron also vowed the press should be free to investigate the “dark recesses” of society, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.

Speaking at a Newspaper Society lunch he said:

I am passionate about not just a free press but a press that feels free to inquire. I don’t want anything to stop that.

I don’t want MPs to use [the inquiry] as an avenue for revenge for the expenses saga.

Derby Telegraph and Nottingham Post printed outside cities for first time

Posted by Press Gazette on 18 October 2011 at 11:36
Tags: Journalism, Newspapers, Regional Newspapers

Northcliffe Media’s Derby Telegraph and Nottingham Post have been printed outside the region for the first time.

The BBC reports that both titles are now being printed in Birmingham – a move the National Union of Journalists claimed put the newspapers at risk of damaging their reputations as “credible, local publications”.

Nottingham Trent University media lecturer Dr Matt Ashton was quoted as saying:

It reflects the fact that a lot of the print industries in this country are in decline and are having to make economies of scale.

Problems they’ve got going forward include inflation, the rising cost of printing the paper, the rising cost of journalism and their audience is getting older.

Obituary: Paul Bach, regional press journalist who created Saga magazine

Posted by Press Gazette on 17 October 2011 at 11:07

The Daily Telegraph today pays tribute to the founder editor of Saga Magazine, Paul Bach, who has died aged 72.
An obituary in today’s Daily Telegraph tells the story of how Bach rose from a reporter on a weekly newspaper to starting what would eventually become the largest-circulation monthly magazine in Britain.

Bach was born in Forest Gate, East London, and found his first job as a reporter on the Stratford Express, before moving to South Wales and taking up various posts with Thomson Regional Newspapers (and winning an award for his coverage of the Aberfan disaster in 1966).

He was later editor in chief of the Celtic Press group of 12 regional newspapers and became editor of the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph in 1972.

In 1976 he returned to East London as group editor of the Stratford Express series before making the move into public relations in 1979 when he moved to Saga Holidays in Folkestone.

News Corp shareholder revolt grows ahead of Friday’s AGM

Posted by Dominic Ponsford on 17 October 2011 at 10:33
Tags: Broadcast, Journalism, National Newspapers

The shareholder revolt at News Corp is growing ahead of Friday’s AGM - with some major players reportedly joining the anti-Murdoch camp.

The Independent reports here on the growing disquiet over News Corp’s handling of phone-hacking and other allegations of impropriety.

While the Murdoch clan only owns 11 per cent  of News Corp, its shares carry 40 per cent of the voting rights. So there would need to be a near unanimous revolt for Rupert and James Murdoch to be unseated from their positions of power. (more…)
