On to Game 6: What does history show?

For the first time since 2003, the World Series produced a 2-2 tie after four games and will see its 24th Game 6 in 42 series since the division era started in 1969. Of the previous 23 that went at least six games in that time, the team that won Game 5 has won the World Series 10 times, and 13 series reached seven games.

Since 1993, only eight Series' have gone at least six games. A look back at them:

1993: Phillies vs. Blue Jays

  • Game 5 winner: Phillies
  • Result: Blue Jays in six
  • Notable: Joe Carter's walk-off home run vs. Mitch Williams wins series.

1995: Indians vs. Braves

  • Game 5 winner: Indians
  • Result: Braves in six
  • Notable: Tom Glavine and Mark Wohlers combine on one-hit shutout to clinch Braves' only title during run.

1996: Braves vs. Yankees

  • Game 5 winner: Yankees
  • Result: Yankees in six
  • Notable: Five Yankees pitchers beat Greg Maddux to win fourth game in a row.

1997: Indians vs. Marlins

  • Game 5 winner: Marlins
  • Result: Marlins in seven
  • Notable: Indians takes Game 6 but drop Game 7 when Jose Mesa blows ninth-inning save and Edgar Renteria drives in winner in 11th inning.

2001: Yankees vs. Diamondbacks

  • Game 5 winner: Yankees
  • Result: Diamondbacks in seven
  • Notable: Arizona wins Game 6 15-2 and Game 7 on Luis Gonzalez's walk-off RBI single.

2002: Giants vs. Angels

  • Game 5 winner: Giants
  • Result: Angels in seven
  • Notable: Angels rally from 5-0 deficit in Game 6; John Lackey becomes second rookie to start and win Game 7

2003: Marlins vs. Yankees

  • Game 5 winner: Marlins
  • Result: Marlins in six
  • Notable: Josh Beckett pitches five-hit shutout in clincher at Yankee Stadium.

2009: Yankees vs. Phillies

  • Game 5 winner: Phillies
  • Result: Yankees in six
  • Notable: Andy Pettitte wins Game 6 as Yankees starters excel on three days' rest.
