Phillies decline options on Oswalt, Lidge
Tuesday, October 25, 2011

The Philadelphia Phillies officially declined the 2012 options for the contracts of right-handed pitchers Brad Lidge and Roy Oswalt , the club announced Monday.

"While we will not pick up either of their options, we will remain in contact with representatives for both players about the possibility of bringing them back for the 2012 season," said Ruben Amaro Jr. , senior vice-president and general manager.

"Brad and Roy both made significant contributions to the Phillies over the past several seasons."

Lidge, 34, went 0-2 with one save and a 1.40 ERA in 25 appearances for the Phillies in 2011. He struck out 23 batters in 19.1 innings, an average of 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

Oswalt, also 34, went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts for the Phillies this past season.

Contracts talks

The Cardinals will play their last game within a matter of days. Then the work really begins for general manager John Mozeliak , who will have little time to relish the success of a World Series season. Among the first things on the offseason agenda for Mozeliak will be deciding on the mutual contract option for manager Tony La Russa for 2012, an item that should determined by both parties within two weeks after the end of the World Series. There's also the pending free agency for Albert Pujols . "There's no doubt, he's been the identity of this organization for the past decade," Mozeliak said.

Harry's game

If the World Series extends to seven games, Rangers manager Ron Washington has no plans to alter his pitching rotation. "It's Harry's game," Washington said, referring to Matt Harrison . Even if potential weather issues in St. Louis were to push the series back an extra day, Washington said he wouldn't change his pitching plans. "Matt Harrison earned it," Washington said. "You think Derek Holland earned his start [Sunday] night if you want to talk about struggles. That's the way we roll."
