Jessica Alba, Naomi Watts plan Halloween costumes
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY
2:49 PM

Stars, just like the rest of us, are gearing up for Halloween.

Naomi Watts and actor Liev Schreiber have two sons: Alexander, 4, and Samuel 2. "They've got a few ideas for costumes," Watts told USA TODAY last night at the Oprah Winfrey/Ralph Lauren interview at Lincoln Center. Deciding is the tough part.

"We've got some we might repeat. They're very into it this year. We've got kings. We've got dragons. We've got turtles. We've got policemen. They're all over the place."

Jessica Alba's oldest child, Honor, 3, however, is sure of what she wants for a costume. "My daughter is going to be a Bubble Guppy," a Nick Jr. character. "I had to make her costume."

Snooki peddles new perfume
By Olivia Barker, USA TODAY
2:17 PM

She's a reality TV star, a fashion designer (OK, of fuzzy slippers), spray tan shiller and a, uh, novelist. So what does Snooki add next to her growing resume? Perfumer, of course.

Housed in a slim pink leopard-print bottle, the new Snooki by Nicole Polizzi may not feature any whiff of pickles or meatballs, but it does offer the scent of "pink cupcake" and, appropriately enough for the siren of Seaside Heights, "seaside driftwood." There's also a hint of "sexy woods" – perhaps a nod to a future Jersey Shore locale?

Polizzi will peddle her perfume from a different corner of cable, HSN, on Nov. 10 in a 2-hour show, A Very Snooki Holiday Gift Special (8 p.m. ET). $45 buys you 3.3 ounces and a matching tote.

Brett Ratner: Best Oscar hosts are comedians
By Donna Freydkin, USA TODAY
1:58 PM

Director Brett Ratner is producing next year's Oscars telecast, and motormouthed comedian Eddie Murphy is hosting. So what can Ratner, who helmed Murphy's comedy Tower Heist, reveal about the upcoming movie gala?

Not much. Except that he's thrilled with his choice of host. "I knew one things that I needed a comedian. The best hosts have been comedians. I felt like when I got Eddie, I got a lot of confidence and became almost fearless now," he says.

Yes, the show will have its LOL moments. But Ratner also wants it to be "poignant and have heart. I want it to be entertaining. You don't have much time for theatrics. Now I have a comedic genius to execute these great ideas."

Of course, Ratner has loftier goals than just getting a few chuckles out of the audience: "I want people to really care about these smaller categories."

Who is No. 1 on 'Top-Earning Dead Celeb' list?
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY
12:32 PM

Bet you can guess the answer.

Just in time for Halloween comes Forbes' annual list of Top-Earning Dead Celebrities, with Michael Jackson, sadly, taking the No. 1 spot again.

Elizabeth Taylor, who died on March 23, came in at No. 5.

Over the past 12 months Jackson's estate brought in $170 million from sales of his music and his stake in the Sony/ATV catalog, reports Forbes. While that's a big drop from the $275 million Jackson earned in the previous 12 months, it's enough to make him the second highest-earning pop act over the past year, dead or alive, after U2.

There are 15 people on the list for a combined $366 million between October 2010 and October 2011. Most have long been dead, including Charles M. Schulz, John Lennon, George Harrison and Andy Warhol. Amy Winehouse is not on the list.

Salma Hayek: No high heels? 'Tragic!'
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY
10:36 AM

Salma Hayek loves her high heels. But she hasn't been able to wear them lately. We've seen her with her foot wrapped up. Last night, she explained to David Letterman what happened.

She tore two ligaments during the World Cup last year. "You were in the World Cup?" asked Dave.

No, but she hurt her ankle area and didn't want surgery.

She then twisted her ankle again six months ago, right before she was supposed to play a stripper/prostitute in a French movie. "Two days before we start, I twist it!"

She added, "The worst part about it is you can't wear heels. You've never been a Mexican short woman! This is tragic," she told Dave. "I often say, had it not been for high heels, I would still be in Coatzacoalcos [in Mexico] with 10 kids and this big!"

Tara Reid: 'Never really married'
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY
10:17 AM

That quickie wedding in Greece in August, when Tara Reid and Zack Kehayov tied the knot, may not have been the real thing.

Just about a month ago, Reid and Kehayov were all smiles in a photograph taken in London.

TMZ cameras caught a "tired" Reid at LAX and in a video posted today when Reid is asked about being a newlywed, she says, "We were never really married, never legal."

No word from her or her rep yet.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy defends his 'Dancing' remarks
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY

Dancing With the Stars pro Maks Chmerkovskiy, who has partnered with Erin Andrews, Brandy and Kirstie Alley in the past and now is competing with soccer star Hope Solo, got mad last night when judge Len Goodman said Solo's rumba was her "worst dance" of the season.

More:  Chaz Bono was also miffed

Usually the stars and pros have to quietly take the criticism, but Maks spoke up. After Goodman said he'd been in the business for 50 years and knew what he was talking about, Maks said snapped that it was "time to go."

Backstage after the show, Maks stuck to his guns. "Len is the only one who comes from a ballroom background, and I really respect his opinion," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "I've danced for 27 years, and I've won more titles than Len ever even participated in."

As for Maks' remark on camera to co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet that "... this is my show," the dancer explained backstage, "I feel like it's my show, and together, with other pros, I dedicated six years of my life to this show. I've helped make it what it is, but I've never taken it away from anybody else who participated."

So how did the other stars feel about Maks' outburst?

E!'s Kristin Dos Santos reports a roundup of reaction, including:

"He did go a little too far with it, but it is what it is." —J.R. Martinez

"He spoke his opinion and he should be allowed to do it." —Lacey Schwimmer

I felt like the judges have been incredibly generous this season so I was surprised." —Derek Hough

'Dancing' Week 6: Chaz, Maks miffed about low scores
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY

Tears! Tension! And ticked-off stars.

Things heated up during week six in the Dancing With the Stars ballroom as the seven remaining celebs performed to Broadway songs.

The cast of Sister Act kicked things off with a rousing medley from the show. Kristin Chenoweth sang a medley of Maybe This Time from Cabaret and I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady. And the couples performed a really fun group dance to a medley of Big Spender from Sweet Charity and Money Money from Cabaret.

But during the individual dances, things got heated. Here's how it all played out:

Ricki Lake and the amazing Derek Hough quickstepped to Luck Be a Lady from Guys and Dolls. They earned a long standing ovation for their fun, fast-paced performance. Len said, "You were flyin'!" Bruno raved: "Impeccable style. Outstanding choreography." Carrie Ann added: "It was so quick, so precise, so sophisticated ..." Scores: 10, 9, 10 = 29

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff nailed their quickstep dancing to Nowadays from Chicago, in what Smirnoff said was "the most difficult choreography" she has ever done on the show. Len praised him for being "relentless." Bruno: "It's a hit!" Carrie Ann: "Bob Fosse would have been proud." Scores: 10, 9, 10 = 29

Nancy Grace, who seems to do nothing but argue with her partner Tristan MacManus, performed a jaunty, fun foxtrot to Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Spamalot. And the judges liked it. Said Bruno: "You captured the feel of it, yet you did a foxtrot. Well done." Carrie Ann: "You nailed it. I would call that a show stopper." Critical Len noted that her posture and footwork were off. Scores: 9, 7, 8 = 24

David Arquette and pro partner Kym Johnson danced to We Go Together from Grease, doing a high-energy quickstep, which Arquette explained he liked because "it's really joyful. And it's very similar to my personality." Estranged wife Courteney Cox and Arquette's daughter, Coco, cheered him on, as they do every week. Carrie Ann praised Arquette's performance, but said he was out of sync. Len said, "It was a bit rough 'round the edges," but "it was fun!" Bruno said Arquette was "like a frisky teenager on spring break." Arquette admitted after the dance, "I got a little crazy out there." Scores: 8, 7, 8 = 23

Rob Kardashian got a visit during rehearsals from mom Kris Jenner, who welled up with pride. "You've gone from a boy to man," she said, explaining, "You used to be this shy boy." Rob declared that he was shy no more. "I'm ready to kick some butt in this competition!" His Cha Cha to Walk Like a Man from Jersey Boys brought cheers from the crowd that included sisters Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian, as well as Khloe's husband, Lamar Odom, and Kim's husband, Kris Humphries. But the judges were not kind to Rob, saying his dance wasn't manly enough. Scores: 8, 7, 7 = 22

Hope Solo got some pointers from three sexy DWTS troupe dancers, brought in by her tough-love partner Maks Chmerkovskiy, to prep her for a rumba to Rent's Seasons of Love. But the lessons didn't pay off. Carrie Ann praised her movement quality but said she seemed forced at times. Len said it was her "worst dance of the whole season." Maks got ticked off and said maybe it was time for Len to "get out of the business." Carrie Ann told him not to be "disrespectful." Scores: 7, 6, 7 = 20 Maks said after the scoring, "With all due respect, this is my show," he said, "I helped make it what it is."

Chaz Bono struggled in rehearsals to learn to tango to the Phantom of the Opera theme. "You can't rely on me to get you through this anymore," partner Lacey Schwimmer told him. He sported the Phantom mask and tails, and danced his heart out, but the effort wasn't enough. Bruno felt the character didn't fit him: "It was like watching a cute little penguin trying to be a menacing bird of prey." Carrie Ann said Chaz was aggressive, but his moves were lacking. Len was critical, too. Scores: 7, 6, 6 = 19

Chaz, still out of breath from the dance, looked miffed. When Brooke Burke-Charvet asked for his reaction, Chaz replied: "Not much to say, is there?"

'SNL' star writes of crack, cutting
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY
3:58 PM

Stars often promise to tell all, but former Saturday Night Live star Darrell Hammond really is.

In his new memoir, God If You're Not Up There, I'm F*cked (out Nov. 8), he writes of being an alcoholic drug addict who cut himself, reports The New York Post.

On the back of the book jacket, Hammond, who is well known for his Bill Clinton impersonation, not to mention his Dick Cheney, John McCain, Al Gore, Donald Trump, Regis Philbin and Sean Connery impressions, explains:

"I have to give the SNL crew props — it cannot have been easy to work with me. Over the years, the medication I was on included: Depacote, Lamictal, Zyprexa, Abilify, Zoloft, Ativan, Triavil and Klonopin. I was drinking, doing coke, cutting myself in my dressing room. I was repeatedly shipped off to rehab or a psychiatric unit, and once taken out of the SNL offices in a straitjacket. But somehow, perhaps because I'm my father's son after all, I was able to soldier on and perform. That is, until I wasn't."

He says he "kept a pint of Remy" at his desk, did "obscene amounts of cocaine" and spent time in a Harlem "crack house."
