This new animated trailer for for Monolith's upcoming class-based FPS, Gotham City Impostors might not get any new converts among the ranks of people scratching their heads at the idea of a comedy-tinged shooter set on the mean streets of Gotham, but as someone already looking forward to this way out of left field title, it's just one more thing keeping my interest piqued.

All-Star Western #1, Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray (w), Moritat (a) [Print]
THE PITCH: In 1880's Gotham, crime stalks the streets and Jonah Hex is the twisted face of justice.
HOW WAS IT? You can usually gauge home much I enjoyed one of these by how stupid the PITCH second reads--it's kind of 1:1 deal with the better books getting the more hyped up, goofy-sounding blurbs. And I did enjoy All-Star Western a lot, primarily because Palmiotti and Gray (and the stellar artist Moritat) gave me something I didn't even know I wanted: a buddy cop thriller set in 1880's Gotham starring Jonah Hex and stuffy physician/student of the human mind Amadeus Arkham. In this deluxe issue, Hex is hired to find a serial killer preying on prostitutes on the streets of Gotham and Arkham--a budding practitioner of the still-not-quite-a-thing-yet science of psychology--tags along. The conceit is that he's doing it because he believes he might have some insight into the inner workings of the mind of the killer but really he functions to provide a viewpoint character as Hex tears it up around Gotham. So our reviewer pretty much flipped for Detective Comics #1, calling it "damn good" and heralding the final, admittedly gruesome (though freakin' awesome) last page. Well now, we can find out what happens after the blood was spilled in Detective Comics #2!
DC was awesome enough to send us an exclusive preview for the issue which hits stands, both digital and physical October 5, 2011! Read more...

With yesterday's reveal of Amazon's, iPad-competing tablet, Kindle Fire, DC Entertainment has announced that it will release a slate of its legendary graphic novels exclusively to the device, including Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns and Superman : Earth One. Justice League Dark #1, Peter Milligan (w), Mikel Janin (a), [Print](Writer, Artist)
THE PITCH: Imagine all of the strange supernatural characters from Vertigo hanging out, having adventures in the DCU. Well, maybe not quite that.
HOW WAS IT? This might be one to split audiences, I think, mostly because of the sometimes purple prose (sometimes not, see BEST BIT) with which writer Peter Milligan constructs the narration by seer Madame Xanadu (having less fun here than she was centuries ago in Demon Knights). Essentially, she's reading the cards and see that the world is going to hell because the mad witch, Enchantress, is maybe on purpose, maybe on accident throwing a bunch of bad magic out there, causing all kinds of calamity. The traditional League lineup (here represented by Wonder Woman, Superman, and Cyborg) can't do anything against this kind of magic, so it falls to an unorthodox group of characters to try to fix things, whatever that entails.
So we get Madame Xanadu drawing cards and flashing to each of the characters who will presumably be joining the lineup of the unfortunately named Justice League: Dark ("your after hours, sexy Justice League"). And since this is a riff on characters primarily associated with Vertigo for the last few years, the future roster is looking kind of dysfunctional, from the creepy punchline of Shade's argument with his girlfriend, to Zatanna's scrub status on the Justice League, to John Constantine--well, he's always been a little bit of a bastard, so there's nothing new there. Milligan overplays his hand a bit in making Madame Xanadu a junkie on top of everything else--an extra bit of edge that doesn't add much at first glance. Read more...

Batman: The Dark Knight #1, David Finch & Paul Jenkins (w), David Finch (a) [Print Edition]
THE PITCH: Batman, but you know, eXXXtreme.
HOW WAS IT? If you liked what Finch was doing on Batman before – basically, his distilled, ‘roided out version of Gotham City action, you’re probably still going to like this, as it doesn’t miss a beat. In fact, there’s even a neat visual metaphor for the title on the last page. It’s a big, dumb action movie. To break it down: Detective Comics is aiming for being The Dark Knight; Batman is aiming for Batman: The Animated Series; and Batman: The Dark Knight is trying to be the WWE. Read more...
