If you were a fan of the late, beloved Warren Ellis title NextWave, under no circumstances should you miss Legion of Monsters #1. I had no idea what to expect going in, but coming out? I’m seriously in love with this title, and can’t wait to read issue two.
Basically, without spoiling anything, there’s two paths running in this issue: one follows monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone as she, in her usual ridiculous, over the top fashion, tracks down a beastie who’s been killing people in small town England; the other takes place in Monster Metropolis, the city full of beasties under Manhattan, as they attempt to set up a self enforcing security squad. I’m not going to spoil any of the twists and turns, but this is funny, creative, over the top fun that anyone who likes monster movies – or especially action movies – should miss. Read more...

Munchkin Axe Cop is the game you never knew you wanted. That is to say, you may be a fan of Munchkin or you may be a fan of Axe Cop, but unless you've got a love for both, you won't realize that they make an absolutely perfect pair.
Stop and think about it for a second. Munchkin is a game where players fight a never-ending series of offbeat creatures in their quest to reach level 10. Along the way they'll collect weapons and loot (with pun-laden names), and experience frequent changes to their race and class. This makes for an overall hectic experience filled with two things: violence and corny humor.
Axe Cop is a comic written by a 5-year-old and it shows. The pages include some of the most oddball characters thrown into a rapidly evolving story, where more often than not, there's a fight taking place. The humor here is a perfect fit for the minds behind Munchkin to work their magic on. Heck, even MTV Geek's own Alex Zalben has described it as the "most ridiculous setup for a poop joke in the history of comic books." Slap this theme onto the already-great card game I described above, and you've got a winner on your hands.
Even though there are already ten different versions of the original Munchkin game covering everything from pirates to zombies, Munchkin Axe Cop will be the first ever licensed set. The game will be released later this month, but between that and the release of the Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth trade paperback, it seems like October is Axe Cop Month. So let's continue the celebration by doing a sneak peek of our top 5 picks from the 168 cards in this set. It was hard to pick favorites, but these five cards best demonstrate the great pairing of Munchkin and Axe Cop: Read more...

Well, this is it. After five issues, the X-Men are about to move on to their next big status quo, with Wolverine leading one team, and Cyclops leading the other. Before we go, though, it’s time for one last Post-Game on the series with writer Jason Aaron, and X-Men Editor Nick Lowe. So let’s wipe those tears from our eyes, and get right into it!
MTV Geek: First of all, I wanted to thank you guys for sticking with this for the past few months, Schism has been a heck of a ride. On your end, what’s it been like to finally see this to completion? And in a greater sense, were you surprised by any reactions from the fans along the way? Or do you feel like everything fell out as planned?
Nick Lowe: First, thanks for embracing SCHISM so much at MTV Geek. It’s always fun to talk with you guys.
It has been an absolute joy working on SCHISM. I’ve got baseball on the brain, so bear with me in this metaphor… Getting a big series like SCHISM out is like playing playoff baseball. The obstacles to putting out good comics (the insane difficulty of creating a story, telling it well, life getting in the way, scheduling, etc…) are like facing the New York Yankees in a post-season series. I’m from Cleveland so I hate the Yankees. ANYWAY, I’ve edited several big stories and I like to think that the books won the series. Some of them were much closer and went to Game 5 or Game 7. With SCHISM, Jason pitched no-hitters and Carlos, Frank, Daniel, Alan and Adam all hit homers or hit for the cycle and stole bases and such. I, as the manager, of course, argued with the umpires a few times and got kicked out of several games… is this metaphor going on too long? Read more...

What would a line of figures based on Image Comics' The Walking Dead be without zombies? Boring as hell, that's what! Without those slack-jawed, brain-munchers you'd just have some toys of people who walk around a lot and constantly bicker with one another when not dying left and right! Thankfully, McFarlane Toys released zombies as two of the first four figures in the series--that's a 1:1 zombie-to-human ratio and we like those odds! Join us as we take a look at the two undead figures from the first wave: the Zombie Roamer and the Zombie Lurker!

There are only six issues left of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's The Boys, and according to the long-running series' writer, it won't be pretty. Ennis brought the series to Dynamite a few years back after its brutal, perverse spin on superheroes didn't go over so well with then-publisher DC/Wildstorm. Since the move, Ennis has been hammering out one continuous story about the the titular group that monitors the capes, charting their inevitable, likely final conflict with the entirely corrupt Justice League stand-in, the Seven.
And it's been a long time coming: each of the Boys, led by the very dangerous Butcher, has a reason to hate the supers and the company that manufactured them, the military-industrial conglomerate Vought-American. While the Seven--not so much led, as terrorized--by the likely psychopathic Homelander have been embarrassed, thwarted, (and in one case) maimed by Butcher's people. There's a tense game here as both sides wait to make their move. The current arc, "The Big Ride" sees some unseen player orchestrating a confrontation between both sides, setting up a murder and waiting for the big clash.
It might not go down this arc, but it's coming.

…And so, after one of the busiest Septembers ever, DC’s New 52 is done, and we’ve conclusively proven whether comics are dead forever or not. Or rather, here we are in month 2, and things are still rolling as usual! Or are they? Here’s some of our picks for the best stuff that comes out on comic book stands this week:
Let’s talk trades first, because why not? We’ve already told you several times to pick up the AXE COP: BAD GUY EARTH trade paperback, including on the volume itself, but hey, one more time couldn’t hurt: buy the darn thing, it’s hilarious for violent kids of all ages. If you’re feeling a little less violent, though, definitely grab Kate Beaton’s hilarious HARK A VAGRANT, which we’ve had sitting on our nightstand for weeks, and still makes us laugh. Also funny? ROGER LANGRIDGE’S THE SHOW MUST GO ON from BOOM!, which collects some of the writers less collected creations.
Speaking of which, ROGER LANGRIDGE’S SNARKED #1 hits today, and it’s a delightful romp, mixing characters from Lewis Carroll’s novel with vaudeville slapstick and high adventures – it’s a can’t miss. Similarly, jump on board SKULLKICKERS #11 from Image, which is proving to be one of the best fantasy series on the stands – and the funniest. We like funny stuff, what can we say? Read more...
