Tribe, casino makes new math books possible for local kids
August 29, 2011

PONCA CITY, Okla. – Osage Nation and its economic enterprise, Osage Casino, delivered a $5,000 sponsorship to McCord Elementary School for use for new math books for math and reading programs.

“This is a big way to improve student achievement since our current math books are eight years old,” said McCord Elementary School Superintendent and Principal Boyd Braden. “With budget cuts of $240,000 out of a $1.5 million budget, the school has not had the funds for new math books. Thank you to the Osage Nation and Osage Casino in Ponca City for their support of education.”

McCord School District has 22 percent Native American student population with 36 Osage students. Osage Nation has assisted the school over the past several years as a community partner. The Osage Nation Johnson O’Malley (JOM) Program provides school supplies for Native American students at the school.

“It’s important to be part of the community and we are happy to partner with McCord School,” said Osage Casino General Manager John Birch. “It’s important to support our neighbors. We partner with the Ponca City community, the chamber of commerce and the local school systems.”

McCord Elementary School has more than 200 students. The school’s motto “We Develop Success” encourages students to practice listening and learning skills and become successful as citizens in the 21st century.
