MARQUETTE - One person is dead, another wounded and a third in custody after an early morning shooting in the city of Marquette.

The Marquette Police Department received at least two 9-1-1 calls at 1:58 a.m. reporting a shooting at 1005 W. Ridge St., said Chief Michael Angeli. Upon arrival, police found a 49-year-old Marquette man deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

Another shooting victim, a 23-year-old Marquette woman, was found with a wound to her leg, police said. She was taken to Marquette General Hospital for treatment, Angeli said.

Investigation led to a suspect, a 22-year-old Marquette man. Through interviews and searching, he was found hiding in a vehicle a short distance from the scene and taken into custody, Angeli said.

"All those involved are acquainted," Angeli said. "But this is not a family thing."

The shooting took place at the apartment of the female gunshot victim, Angeli said, adding that the suspect in the case also lived at the apartment.

"I can say the male who died was not a resident there," he said.

Angeli said he could not recall police having been sent to the address in the past.

As of 7:30 this morning, the female gunshot victim was undergoing surgery, Angeli said, but no further information on her condition was available.

"The suspect was jailed this morning on a parole violation, but he hasn't been charged yet with the shooting," Angeli said.

He added that a shotgun was used in the shooting and that there were no other witnesses to the shooting.

Angeli said the investigation continues, with the crime lab from the Michigan State Police from the Negaunee post and Marquette County Medical Examiner Randy Smith at the scene.

Angeli said more information might be made available later today.

Also assisting Marquette police this morning were the K-9 unit from the MSP post, Northern Michigan University Public Safety and Medi-Ride ambulance.
