Exclusives! If the SDCC exclusive toys were any indication, then whatever Hasbro has up their sleeves for NYCC will both be exceptionally cool AND incredibly sought after.

New York Comic Con (NYCC) isn’t quite as large as San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) but that doesn’t mean it’s any less fun! The convention has been getting bigger and bigger every year with 96,000 attendees in 2010. Since it is a little smaller, you’ll probably be able to get into the panels you want to see and talk to any of vendors you want to talk to unlike SDCC, where you have to wait in line all day to get into one panel. The ability to see more stuff is exactly why I’ll be doing my best to make sure I’ll be at this year’s NYCC coming up October 13-16!

To find out more about why the Con moved to four days, and talk about some of the questions that have been popping up online, we chatted with Lance Festerman, Group Vice President of ReedPop, and all around nice guy.
MTV Geek: So NYCC is moving to four days this year... How long has this decision been in the works?
Lance Festerman: Really, it seemed pretty obvious during the show this year that it was time to grow, but there was a lot of follow up to be done after that. Could we get the building, would it impact move in for our exhibitors, what would the hours be, did our exhibiting customers want this, etc. So it took some time for us to confirm that this was not just our hunch but in fact what our customers actually wanted.
Geek: Why is it important to expand to four days? Why now? Read more...

OK this one's for all you ladies out there, oh and you geek guys that need something for your fabulous fangirl!! The lovely Ashley Eckstein, actress and voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is hoping to change the perception that science fiction and fantasy is not just for the boys.
Ashley, along with her partner Araca Group, formed the company Her Universe, to create merchandise for lady sci-fi fans! And guess who their first gig is with?? You got it, Lucasfilm baby!
The Star Wars Collection from Her Universe has t-shirts, hats, jewelry and hoodies and well-designed and sized for chicks! At first, I was a bit skeptical, thinking "how much more Star Wars merchandise do we need in the galaxy?" But once I saw Ashley's stuff at the Her Universe booth at both Star Wars Celebration V and the last New York Comicon I realized why!
Check out this super cool Boba Fett underwear set, it's just like the underoos collection from the olden days:

Things are...complicated for Crystal, the main character in Karl Altstaetter's Me2. The future series for MTV Comics tells the story of a girl with multiple, superpowered personalities, each with an agenda of its own. Crystal soon learns not only that the personalities exist, but that they can occasionally leave her body and head out on their own.
According to Altstaetter, when we spoke with him at the 2010 New York Comic Con, the multiple personalities are a metaphor for the identity issues that plague so many teenage girls. "Most of your life is about identity," he said. "Defining your identity through clothes you wear, the music you listen to, and in this case, each one of those identities that she's dealing with internally, manifests itself as a person, so I'm able to play out that drama in a very different way." "The books that influenced me as a kid, when I think back were almost predominately Batman books in terms of the ones that I remember being real seminal reads," said writer Scott Snyder from the MTV Geek skybox during the 2010 New York Comic Con.
Now, beginning with issue #871, Snyder can put those influences to use as he straps on the cape, cowl and utility belt and heads to Gotham City to guide the freshly-appointed Dark Knight, Dick Grayson through a new arc in DC's Detective Comics entitled, "The Black Mirror."
"It focuses on this idea that Gotham is essentially a black mirror to whoever takes on the mantle of the Bat, the same way that Batman or Bruce's villains are extensions of his psychology," Snyder said. "Gotham is capable of throwing back the worst nightmares that you have about yourself to you in the form of new challenges and new villains and new crazies and new baddies." He went on to say, "Our story is really about Gotham and how it will do its best to break you if you are the Batman of Gotham City." Read more...

Vision Machine isn’t just a new piece of sci-fi fiction from writer (Incredible Hulks), and filmmaker (Robot Stories) Greg Pak; it’s also something of a social statement, with Pak through his Pak Man Productions banner releasing the book under a Creative Commons license. “[I] figured that a project like this—that deals with issues of copyright and trademark—should be released under those kind of conditions,” Pak explained to MTV Geek during an interview at the 2010 New York Comic Con. Indeed, if there’s one message being aimed at readers of this three-issue miniseries is to read your EULA.
The series follows the arc of progress and exploitation when Sprout Computers—a stand-in for Apple in the year 2061—releases the “iEye” device: a pair of glasses which allow users to record, manipulate, and send video content to the global network of iEye users. The bulk of the narrative in the series’ first two issues focuses on a trio of friends and aspiring filmmakers—Jane, Buddy, and Dave—and how the new technology impacts them individually, and society as a whole. It, in essence, makes the usually unsexy issue of copyright a social and moral challenge as increasingly we’re all becoming content creators in this connected world of ours. What if you were able to license a Sinatra tune for your indie film project for only $50? Sound good? Well, what if the same license holders were able to charge you for every time you hummed, whistled, or maybe even thought of the same tune? Read more...
Jeff Lemire knows a thing or two about small town living. He grew up in a tiny farming town in rural Canada, the setting for his phenomenal Top Shelf Productions series, Essex County. He understands that the importance of the story lies not in the action, the muscles, the violence or the explosions, but in the connections between characters and the growth and dynamics of a family. Now, he's bringing that sensibility to Smallville, Kansas for his take on DC Comics' Superboy, which will see its debut issue hit the shelves tomorrow November 3rd!
"He's a cool character," Lemire told us from the MTV Geek skybox at the 2010 New York Comic Con. "What I'm trying to do is sort of focus on small town life and sort of show what it would be like to have superheroes living and working in a rural setting." He continued, "I try to build a sense of family and community around him." Lemire went on to say that he chose to use Conner Kent's lab-created powers as a metaphor for being an awkward teenager. "It's really a book about community, family, and under all that I'm doing this overall story arc that's kind of a secret history of Smallville that's sort of this mysterious horror story."
Speaking of mysterious horror, Lemire is still plugging away at his very successful and very strange, post-apocalyptic series, Sweet Tooth. "It follows a young boy named Gus who has the features of deer antlers." He continued, "It sort of follows him as he goes from complete issolation to this dangerous world." Sweet Tooth is entering a serious climax as its three narrative threads collide at issue 17. "It's this big epic war in this world, building up and that's gonna end in issue 17 and then it'll be this new status quo for the book."
Lemire said that the success of Sweet Tooth is due to in no small part to his relationship with DC Comics, which led to him signing an exclusive deal with the publisher. "They did such a great job of marketing it and getting it out there and making the book a success, so I felt really comfortable with them already." He added, "It just seemed like a logical choice, to stay with them and kind of commit a little bit more with them, because they obviously put a commitment to me."

Since 2004, Cassie Hack has been going to toe-to-toe (or bat-to-machete) with the evilest, most brutal of horror movie slashers both classic and created. From demented doll, Chucky to Re-Animator's Herbert West. Tim Seely, the writer and artist behind Hack/Slash has plunged his "final girl" Cassie and her "gentle giant" partner, Vlad into the craziest, bloodiest and most fun scenarios in horror comics today.
The seeds of the series were planted while Seely was sick in bed around Halloween and found himself watching horror movie marathon after horror movie marathon. "There's a world here. It all takes place in the same place and they all have the same rules," he realized. "It kind of just became the universe of the horror movie sequel was just one place, and here's this girl and her friend who walk around in it." Read more...
