It was Grant Morrison’s Comic-Con. From rebooting Superman for a new era, to taking Batman to places he’s never gone before, all eyes were on the revolutionary – and very funny in person – writer. Luckily, we snagged some time with the busy scribe to talk about all his projects at MTV Geek headquarters, including the two mentioned above, his new book Supergods, and even how he’s trying to piss you – the fans – off.
First up was Action Comics #1, which finds the Man of Steel donning jeans, a t-shirt, and a tiny cape to fight for social injustice. But beyond that, Morrison chatted with us about how the first six issues of the book are all about how Clark goes from regular joe clothes, to donning a suit of Kryptonian battle armor:

There was no earth-shattering, world-changing manga news this week, but there were some smaller items that should please fans of a variety of different genres.
Most of the news coming out of Otakon was about anime, not manga, but Bandai announced two new manga licenses, Nichijō (My Ordinary Life) and Code Geass: Shikkoku no Renya (Code Geass: Renya of the Darkness); they have also licensed the Nichijō anime. Also, if you're interested in the bizarre and unusual, Erin Finnegan has posted the audio of her Unusual Manga Genres panel at the Ninja Consultant website.
I would have thought we were done with San Diego Comic-Con news by now, but Lori Henderson caught something that slipped by the rest of us: Udon Entertainment announced that they would be publishing a two-volume Sengoku Basara manga, based on the video game. As Lori notes, Udon actually licensed this once before but it fell through for some reason, but that may be all to the good, as Funimation has licensed the anime and there's a new movie coming out in Japan, making the property more visible than ever before.
Also, Deb Aoki reports in on the Best and Worst Manga Panel at SDCC, which seemed to focus more on "best" than "worst." Read more...

At San Diego Comic Con, Hasbro has once again released a massive figure in their, usually much smaller, Marvel Universe line. While last year brought us the Eater of Worlds known as Galactus, while this year fans were lucky enough to be offered the mutant-hunting automaton-- The Sentinel! These genocidal robots have been around for years in the Marvel Comics' universe, and have recently upped their appearances thanks to the latest X-Men: Schism storyline. Seems like perfect time for a toy, right?

It might not seem like such a big deal that Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys won this year's Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Asia—after all, a manga has to win the manga category, right?—but it is.
The nominees for the Eisner Awards are chosen by a small panel of judges, but the winners are chosen by comics professionals, many of whom are not familiar with manga at all. Consequently, the winners in previous years have been that handful have crossed over to become popular with comics fans: Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira, Kazuo Koike's Lone Wolf and Cub, Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life, Osamu Tezuka's Dororo, Taiyo Matsumoto's Tekkonkinkreet—the sort of manga that get reviewed in The Comics Journal. Literary manga. Hipster manga. Read more...

MTV was onhand to present the Good Vibes panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, to unveil the new high school surfer comedy featuring the voices of Josh Gad and Adam Brody. The panel was attended by creator and executive producer David Gordon Green, Executive producer and show runner Tom Brady, and creators Brad Abelson and Mike Clements. Abelson and Clements originally had the idea of a couple of slacker surfer guys in Southern California trying to get girls. Initially, it was a pilot at Fox, but ultimately ended up at MTV.
Green says they want to set out the ultiamte show about youth without making it exclusively for the young. They referenced movies like Dazed and Confused and Fast Times At Ridgemont High which could be silly, funny, and fun but true to to the youthful characters.
After a screening of an episode from the upcoming season, the panel was joined by Jake Busey, Adam Brody, Tony Hale, and Alan Tudyk to talk about the show. Read more...
