So on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 Woodsy did a day of some Star Wars panels and also got to hang out with my hero Bonnie Burton, the Sr. Editor for www.starwars.com! First I went to the Dark Horse Comics: 20 Years of Star Wars Panel with Randy Stradley and a host of Star Wars guests from comics and more, including:
Mick Harrison (Dark Times)
Scott Allie and Stephane Roux (Jedi -- The Dark Side)
John Jackson Miller (Knight Errant)
Dave Filoni and the Fillbach Brothers (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Timothy Zahn (Choices of One)
Shelly Shapiro (editor-at-large, Del Rey)
They discussed the future of digital comics and gave out a cool poster too:
Check out MTV Geek's Don Hatfield's full coverage on the panel.
Next up was the Star Wars Collectibles Update, moderated by Chris Spitale of Lucas Licensing with:
Bryan Ono of eFX
Ashly Powell of Gentle Giant Studios
Dan Lujan of Kotobukiya
Brant Bridges of Sideshow Collectibles
They showed us some ROCKIN' stuff coming out and talked about their product development process, working with consumers, it was a great panel.
eFX has a new and improved Stormtrooper helmet coming out around February of 2012. Kotobukiya has super cool ice cube trays available in both Carbonite Han Solo and R2D2! I already have these and made Jell-o with them, so fun!! They also have a new Obi-Wan Kanobi figure coming out and the resemblance to Alec Guinness is a showstopper, LITERALLY. They had a paint master paint the face and it is DEAD ON. And I love their Lightsaber chopsticks -- I even impressed my favorite sushi restaurant with these!!
Next up was Rendering the Galaxy Far, Far Away: The Digital Art and Light of The Clone Wars Panel. What does it take to bring The Clone Wars to the screen? This panel was hosted by Pablo Hidalgo, and featured the ever-charismatic supervising director Dave Filoni, the mega-talented CG lighting and FX supervisor Joel Aron, and a producer who's name I did not know!
This was a great panel, especially since I used to work at ILM, I could totally get into Joel's in-depth discussion of the effects and visuals created. He is a MASTER GENIUS, NO JOKE!! They showed lots of clips from season 4 and discussed lighting, animation, painting, underwater battle scenes. Joel said that they are updating the facial expressions of the Clones and in Season 4 the Clones will have 90 facial expressions. They showed several demos of their work and rendering, it was really cool to see all the work that goes into a 22-minute episode! Dave said that with the other teams in Asia The Clone Wars is worked on about 365 days a year.
Here are some images from Season 4 premiere:
All in all a very informative day!!
