I really wasn't expecting limited edition True Blood headphones to roll into my inbox yesterday evening, but here they are.I'll admit they look pretty slick, but I don’t think slapping True Blood on the side is enough for me to drop the $150 needed to bring them home. So what else is V-MODA bringing to the table with these blood-sucking noise makers? Quite a bit actually. Read more...

Soundtracks are delicate creatures. When the Watchmen movie came out, the opening credits set the musical tone: a nearly five-minute montage of events from the 1940s to the 1980s, set to Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changing.” It was appropriate enough—Alan Moore quotes the song at the end of one of Watchmen’s chapters—but, in the context of the opening credits, it seemed a little too on-the-nose.
Fast forward to the sex scene between Nite Owl and the Silk Spectre. The interminable scene offers some of the least sexy sex in movie history, with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in the background. Sure, it’s a great song, but it’s been used in so many movies and TV shows (especially in the Jeff Buckley cover version) that the song has become a lazy shorthand for conveying complex emotions.
By the time I left the theater, I felt kind of dirty, like the movie version of Watchmen was a one-night stand I’d like to forget. I still feel that way, two years later. So, in order to erase the badness from my memory and resurrect my good feelings about the source material, I’ve come up with a new soundtrack that draws on the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons material. Some of these do overlap with the film soundtrack, as Moore often features song lyrics in the background of his scenes.
1. Rorschach’s Theme: Black Sabbath, “Paranoid.”
Who says Marvel’s Iron Man gets all the Sabbath? The song’s driving tension fits Rorschach’s mental state and general creepiness. And guy who makes a pun about “human bean juice” in his first verbal interaction with the Nite Owl isn’t sane or normal.
2. The Comedian in Vietnam: David Bowie, “China Girl.”

The Angry Birds are on fire these days. The app has been downloaded over 300 million times across multiple platforms, they’re on their way to Hollywood, they recently became superheroes and they‘ve even got a killer fan-made motion comic. Now, Julien Brasart has taken their cutesy theme song and turned it into the hard rockin’ soundtrack it should have always been!
We’re talking about a game in which disgusting green pigs have stolen eggs from some innocent birds who in turn launched a full blown assault on the pig fortresses. If that’s not enough to bust out the guitar for a bad ass Angry Birds solo I don’t know what is. You can watch Julien bust out his version of the Angry Birds theme song below. Read more...

The music of the Muppets gave those of us who grew up in the 1970s and '80s a soundtrack that could be earnest, heartwarming, completely silly, optimistic, wistful, or all of those things at the same time. The Muppets: The Green Album brings together indie rock and rock musicians to cover 11 of the Muppets' most recognizable songs in a lead-up to the release of the new Muppet Movie in November.
The album fits well in the grand tradition of the Muppets' connections with real-world pop culture. Musical guests--from Johnny Cash to Blondie's Debbie Harry to Alice Cooper to Liberace--frequented The Muppet Show, where they dropped the poses of adulthood. The covers on The Green Album reflect this spirit of plucky Muppet fun, devoid of any of the more cynical elements of nostalgia.
