As first reported by Comics Reporter, Drawn and Quaterly will publish legendary, alternative comic artist Daniel Clowes' superhero graphic novel, The Death-Ray in Fall 2011.
The Death Ray tells the story of Andy, a teen orphan, who, after taking a puff on his first cigarette, discovers he has the super-power-like ability to believe he is capable of anything. Andy's discovery leads to a serious case of rageaholism and the discovery of a gadget that changes everything for him.
Drawn and Quaterly says that The Death-Ray re-purposes the iconic tropes of the superhero genre to tell a tale that is sheds light on the darkest part of human morality. "The story of the alienated Andy is drawn and written to perfection with Dan's signature subtle humour, stylistic eloquence, and understated social commentary–showcasing all of the hallmarks of why Dan is one of the preeminent cartoonists of the comics medium," said Chris Oliveros, Editor-In-Chief and Publisher of Drawn Quarterly.
The Death-Ray was previously published in issue #23 in Clowes' anthology series, Eightball, which won an Eisner, a Harvey and an Ignatz award and will be repackaged as a fancy hardcover release.
Jack Black's Electric Dynamite Productions is currently developing The Death-Ray as a motion picture to be helmed by music video director Chris Milk.
Always extremely excited to have more Daniel Clowes both in print and on the big screen!
