Director: David R. Ellis Stars: Sara Paxton, Dustin Milligan, Chris Carmack (Full Cast) Studio: Relativity Media The Plot: A lake-house retreat on the Louisiana Gulf turns into a nightmare for a group of vacationers when they are subjected to an improbable phenomenon: fresh-water shark attacks.
THE BUZZ: The idea of trained/engineered sharks recalls the still-excellent Deep Blue Sea, though the latest from B-movie specialist David R. Ellis also brings the first Anaconda to mind, but we have to imagine that Piranha 3D's sequel-earning success boosted the studio confidence here, even if the release date indicates otherwise (the Labor Day weekend typically is a dumping ground). Meanwhile, this cast is such a grab bag, from young indie-horror vets to an "American Idol" runner-up; can we expect some cameos of a certain caliber -- even B-listers? Director: John Madden Stars: Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: In 1965, Mossad agent Rachel Singer (Mirren) was part of a secret mission to capture and bring to trial the Surgeon of Birkenau, a Nazi war criminal. In her present-day life, when a man claiming to be the killer surfaces in Ukraine, Singer travels to Eastern Europe to seek out the truth.
THE BUZZ: Under new ownership, Miramax Films handed over John Madden's latest to Focus Features; you might remember this historical thriller first was set for release right at the end of 2010. The deal sounded quite gentlemanly and we hope it's a step toward restoring Madden to his Shakespeare in Love prime. Director: Gonzalo López-Gallego Stars: (Full Cast) Studio: Dimension Films The Plot: Decades-old found footage from NASA's Apollo 18 mission, where two American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon.
THE BUZZ: Producer Timur Bekmambetov and the Weinstein Company went viral before cameras rolled on their quickie space mission, which has the kind of advance intrigue that films such as The Fourth Kind and even Skyline have lacked. With Bekmambetov running the set, we aren't worried about the visuals one bit. We are curious to see if this team has anything new to add to the found-footage genre, or if those Blair Witch in Space comparisons might be totally accurate. Director: Alex Gregory Peter Huyck Stars: Jason Sudeikis, Leslie Bibb, Tyler Labine (Full Cast) Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films The Plot: With access to his dad's house in the Hamptons for a holiday weekend, a party-loving guy (Jason Sudeikis) talks his best friends into having an orgy. THE BUZZ: Thankfully this is not in 3D. But, yep, it's another R-rated comedy, and although Orgy is more sexless than its title suggests, we keep hearing the carnal fakeouts give way to strong performances and surprisingly deep characters. Easier to imagine is the thought of Lake Bell and Tyler Labine leading the way here. Message Boards: Would like a serious take on the subject | 10 Films To See In September (what are you watching?) Director: Beto Gómez Stars: Miguel Rodarte, Jesús Ochoa, Joaquín Cosio (Full Cast) Studio: Pantelion Films The Plot: A Mexican crime lord rallies a group of toughs in order to meet his mother's demand: to infiltrate Iraq and rescue his brother.
THE BUZZ: This is the most fun/weirdest looking release to date from upstart distributor Pantelion Films, who scored a surprise hit with From Prada to Nada. Message Boards: una buena idea mal ejecutada | Movie Plot Showtimes |Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Reviews | Reviews
Director: Joann Sfar Stars: Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon, Laetitia Casta (Full Cast) Studio: Music Box Films The Plot: A glimpse at the life of French singer Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino), from growing up in Nazi-occupied Paris, through his years as a jazz musician, and into the era when he was a pop superstar.
THE BUZZ: Comic-book writer Joann Sfar's biopic is positioned as a fairy tale and not a true biography of the legendary singer, actor, womanizer... and the most enlightened reviewers out there indicate the film works best when it's in mythology mode. Star Eric Elmosnino's physical transformation -- most telling, his sleepy, romantic eyes -- seems to be worth the price of admission. Director: Matt Russell Stars: Lucas Black, Robert Duvall, Melissa Leo (Full Cast) Studio: Visio Entertainment The Plot: After a disastrous debut on the pro circuit, a young golfer (Lucas Black) finds himself unexpectedly stranded in Utopia, Texas and welcomed by an eccentric rancher (Robert Duvall).
THE BUZZ: Robert Duvall reunites with his Get Low co-star Lucas Black for an inspirational sports story that sort of looks and feels like it could easily fit into the WWE's movie roster. Director: Tate Taylor Stars: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962: aspiring writer Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan (Stone) returns home after college, where unexpected friendships with African-American maids Aibeleen Clark (Davis) and Minny Jackson (Spencer) result in a book that gives a previously unheard voice to a community's suffering. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Emma Stone makes a dramatic turn in this adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's first novel and subsequent best-seller. It shouldn't be a hard transition for the talented young actress, especially given the caliber of performers around her (Allison Janney, Sissy Spacek, and Cicely Tyson co-star). Our question marks are centered over the head of director Tate Taylor, who also adapted the novel; we mean no offense, but his relative lack of experience behind the camera gives us nothing to support or even rail against -- and that's exactly what holds us back from being fully enthused for this picture. Well, that, and the odd late-summer release date. Message Boards: the check from Celia | the one major point they missed... Director: Olivier Megaton Stars: Zoe Saldana, Michael Vartan, Callum Blue (Full Cast) Studio: Stage 6 Films The Plot: Cataleya Restrepo (Saldana), who was raised in the U.S. by her uncle to be a top-tier assassin, looks to settle with the Colombian drug lord who executed her parents when she was 10 years old. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: This is almost like the Kill Bill sequel that QT has promised ... But really it's Zoe Saldana's opportunity to cash in on her action-star potential that's been the focus of her career since Avatar. With Luc Besson in writer-producer mode and his protégé Olivier Megaton behind the camera for his Transporter 3 follow-up, the potential here is huge. Hey, Michael Vartan: you're back! Director: Rupert Wyatt Stars: James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation The Plot: In present day San Francisco, a scientist (Franco) looks for a cure for Alzheimer's disease by experimenting on a chimpanzee named Caesar. The development of animal intelligence brings about a war for supremacy between humans and apes. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Really we're looking forward to James Franco's sleepy-eyed justifications for the origins story, Andy Serkis's motion-capture work as Caesar, and the reunion of director Rupert Wyatt and Brian Cox, who starred in Wyatt's excellent debut, The Escapist. We'll give this one a chance, but the number of writers who have experimented on this script is worth noting, as is the release-date juggling -- first early summer, then winter, now late summer. Could be a case of fans vs. Fox -- a familiar battle. For Franco, who has the longest To Do List in history, this is the kind of serious-minded entertainment that's perfectly fits his actorly qualities. (That could be construed as a polite way of saying he's best suited for thinky drama.) He's also wonderfully malleable in the right director's hands, though with Serkis, Cox, and pretty young things Freida Pinto and Tom Felton in the mix, we're realizing this is the first big-time leading man challenge for Franco, and, yes, we hope he's more engaging than he was as Oscar co-host ... Director: Troy Nixey Stars: Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison (Full Cast) Studio: FilmDistrict The Plot: A young girl (Madison) sent to live with her father (Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Holmes) discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Troy Nixey got the call from Guillermo del Toro to direct this remake in part because of his short film, Latchkey's Lament, which you can watch here in two parts. I remember being freaked out by the original TV movie's dialogue -- but the creatures? Not really, though we know what visual frights del Toro and his crew is capable of creating. Actually, that's what we're most anticipating here. OK, and part of us really wants to see Katie Holmes tormented in a beautifully decorated home. Director: Jesse Peretz Stars: Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel (Full Cast) Studio: Weinstein Company, The The Plot: A pot bust sends nice-guy Ned (Rudd) to jail, and though he's released early on good behavior, he returns home to discover that his girlfriend has left and taken his dog with her. Homeless and unemployed, his divides his time by couch-surfing at the homes of his three sisters (Banks, Deschanel, and Mortimer) -- and causing chaos in each of their lives. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: The secret ingredient in this comedy? Brother-sister duo Jesse and Evgenia Peretz. Jesse directed and while Evgenia co-wrote the screenplay. While I thought the movie felt a bit overlong, this is going to serve as a great warm-up for Wanderlust, the R-rated (please, oh, please) Paul-Rudd-and-Jennifer-Aniston-go-hippie comedy coming out in October that is reportedly diiiiirty. Director: Robert Rodriguez Stars: Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Joel McHale (Full Cast) Studio: Dimension Films The Plot: A former spy (Alba) returns to her old profession in order to stop a villain known as the Timekeeper (Piven) and his nefarious plan for world domination. Helping her fight evil are her two stepchildren -- who had no idea about her past -- as well as some veteran spy kids. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: A decade after launch, Robert Rodriguez reboots his family spy saga for Dimension Films, a studio desperate (let's not mince words) and willing enough to restart, remake, or continue its standalone and/or franchise properties. Aside from the desire to entice a new generation to love his world of spies and gadgets, perhaps Rodriguez's toughest challenge will be sexying down the actress he first portrayed as a stripper, then Machete's love interest. Also, good luck with still trying to create a villain more fun than Alan Cumming. Message Boards: I really loved this movie. Director: Raja Gosnell Stars: Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, Jonathan Winters (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: The little blue creatures of Smurf village move to New York City after the evil wizard Gargamel chases them out of their mushroom-like homes in the forest. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: This CGI update to the Saturday morning cartoon staple with a cast straight out of a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards show stands a good chance of reviving the trend of randomly replacing every word possible with variations of the word "smurf". Our current favorite? Crazy, Stupid, Smurf. Message Boards: Unnecessary 3-D? | better than avatar Showtimes |Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Reviews | Reviews
Director: Marcus Nispel Stars: Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Muscle-bound warrior Conan the Cimmerian (Momoa) seeks to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: The history of this beefcake barbarian dates back to a series of 1930s comic books, but let's face it, most of us only know him for introducing us to the future Governor of Cal-ee-fornia. Those are big sandals to fill for action star Momoa, who sheds his "Stargate Atlantis" dreads to clang swords with Ron Perlman and Avatar's Stephen Lang. Expect lots of pillaging, loin cloths and no-hold-barred combat from Hollywood's newest go-to-guy for remakes, Marcus Nispel. Meanwhile, Momoa has announced that he's scripting a sequel himself, but we're dubious whether this will successfully reboot/relaunch the franchise. Director: Glenn Ficarra John Requa Stars: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: After his wife (Julianne Moore) reveals that she's been unfaithful and wants a divorce, family man Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) re-enters the single world as protégé to a thirtysomething player (Ryan Gosling). User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Sound funny to you? Well, we hear both Carell and Gosling have never been more comedic (well, Gosling has only had the chance to be creepy-funny) than in this script by getting-hot Dan Fogelman. With this cast, concept, and a major studio behind them, may we finally see the full promise of co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Bad Santa, I Love You Phillip Morris). Funny how the potential Santa sequel is back in the news, with dueling scripts being written at the moment. Director: Craig Gillespie Stars: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: High school senior Charley Brewster (Yelchin) begins to suspect that his new neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Farrell) is a vampire responsible for a string of recent deaths. And when no one believes him -- not his mother, his girlfriend, or his best friend -- he enlists the services of vampire expert Peter Vincent (David Tennant) to take Jerry down. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: While kids today do have the patience for vampires, nothing will eclipse the original's noteworthiness (including the career transition made by Stephen Geoffreys). That said, the assembled talent here impresses, those in front of and behind the camera are all likable to lovable, and most everyone is an underdog in a Hollywood movie star way. Look for Colin Farrell to score big in his first of two big remakes (Total Recall is up next for 2012), while David Tennant should expand on his cult audience who love him as "Dr. Who".
