Beim picknicken

Culinary delights under the open sky

Peasants always used to eat their lunch out in the fields but with time it also became a fashion among the nobility to dine in the open air in summer.

It is hardly surprising that the concept of the picnic emerged in France: with their proverbial ‘savoir vivre’ the French have a reputation for knowing how to enjoy life. Vienna also has many idyllic locations where you can enjoy delicious food in the open air. A big blanket and, naturally, a picnic basket are essential for open-air gourmets. You can fill the basket with your favourite snacks yourself or have it filled at some of Vienna’s best restaurants that offer a wide range of options: from a romantic basket with antipasti and Prosecco to local specialities and Viennese wine.

The most important question is where to spread your blanket and sit down to enjoy all the good things you’ve brought along. Burggarten is a great spot if you want to stay in the city centre; if you have time to venture out a bit we recommend the vineyards or one of the hills in the outer districts where you have a wonderful view and the whole city is at your feet.
