National Governors Association Annual Meeting

Governors Discuss Homeland Security

Salt Lake City, UT
Saturday, July 16, 2011

The National Governors Association is holding its annual meeting this weekend in Salt Lake City.

Today, the governors discussed homeland security ten years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The discussion largely focused on border security along the southern border with Mexico, but the NGA passed a resolution to honor of the vicitims of the terrorist attacks.

Governor Jan Brewer (R-AZ) said "we need more" troops along the border. "We need a secure border," she said. David Aguilar, the nation's highest-ranking Border Patrol agent, told Governor Brewer that Arizona will have "all the techonology it needs" to secure the border by 2014.

Homeland Security & Public Safety Committee Co-Chair Martin O'Malley (D-MD) moderated the session with Gov. Brewer.

Stephen Flynn, President of the non-partisan Center for National Policy, also testified.
