Leica releases firmware update for S2 and S2-P

Leica has released a firmware update for its S2 and S2-P medium format DSLRs. Version 1.0.1.8 brings improvements to the auto-bracketing procedure and adds a customization option to the menu control button on both the S2 and S2-P cameras. Registered users can download the latest firmware via the Owner's Area on Leica's website.

LEICA S2 FIRMWARE UPDATE FW 1.0.1.8 NOW AVAILABLE

Solms, Germany (July 28, 2011) - Leica Camera AG has released a new firmware update for the Leica S-System, FW 1.0.1.8. All Leica S2 and S2-P cameras will now be supplied with the latest firmware version. Users wishing to bring their camera up-to-date can download the firmware update from the "Owners Area" on the Leica website and take advantage of the latest improvements.

The firmware update FW 1.0.1.8 includes a revision of the setting procedure for auto-bracketing. Now, the shutter-release button must only be pressed once to activate the full bracketing sequence. This function is particularly useful for shooting bracketed exposures for HDR post-processing. Additionally, the menu-control button at the top right of the camera can now be programmed to carry out a custom function, allowing users quick access to settings.

That's GREAT news :D

I haven't been that shaken since Bugatti updated the firmware on the ashtray lighting on the Veyron :D

Hard to find a straightforward and complete spec sheet. As for price, perhaps it is in the realm of what JP Morgan said about yachts. But might the S2 price be more or less in league with other medium format models? This is not the sort of hardware one could upgrade every other year, but the S2 appeared in 2008, and might an S3 be around the corner? Is this like the vintage wine that a connoisseur will snif, savor, and praise, but that based on samples alone, delivers about the same "buzz" as jug Gallo?

But it sure would be interesting to see an occasional review of medium format models. Wouldn't a reviewer enjoy an occasional "hands-on" with something like an S2?

The weird thing is that The Register - a British-based IT/tech news site of generally modest means - *has* reviewed some of the current medium format models, including the Pentax 645D and the Hasselblad H4D-40, e.g:

They're nowhere near as thorough as DPReview, and it's a bizarre sidestep for a site that spends most of its time analysing the tablet market. I surmise that the kind of people who are in the market for a medium format digital camera are more likely to personally evaluate the different models than trust a review.

Its bit more like, if you get S2, you wont be disappointed. Its Leica. No reviews needed for that one.. Fun is that its actually smaller then D3 series or 1D. Who would say that for MF camera (though its not film like MF size, bit smaller than that..).

And anyway, theres plenty of samples to check how it works. IMHO, along with 645D is one of best MF (if you want whole package, not body + back, then it would be IQ180 back). Though lens are bit sparse..

Hint...Pentax...you could buy three of them for the price of this thing...
