    International Opportunities in HIV/AIDS Medicine

    The following is a compilation of international opportunities in HIV medicine for physicians and medical students. Participation in most programs is voluntary and some may require registration, travel and/or housing costs.

    Opportunities for:


    Physicians

    AIDS Training Program (ATP) 

    A collaborative effort of HIVMA, IDSA, and the Academic Alliance for AIDS Prevention in Africa, ATP’s goal is to train African physicians in HIV/AIDS care, using HIVMA and IDSA members from around the world as faculty. The program takes place in Uganda and application deadlines are usually announced in October of each year.

    CDC Global Job Opportunities

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Global AIDS Program is actively seeking medical officers and epidemiologists to assist the program in multiple countries. Under the guidance of the CDC country director, medical officers and epidemiologists will work with the CDC team on HIV/AIDS activities and programs in various countries. Those selected will be critical to strengthening capacity and building HIV/AIDS care and treatment skills among CDC partners at both implementer and national levels. The medical officer will also support government partners, and will be critical in the development of care and treatment programs to meet the goals of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the national response to HIV/AIDS in specific countries.

    HealthRight International 

    HealthRight International is a global health and human rights organization working to build lasting access to health for excluded communities. HealthRight works closely with communities and establishes local partnerships to deliver health services, while providing training and equipment to improve systems and enable HealthRight’s partners to deliver services on their own. HealthRight’s goal is to build lasting access to health, helping to realize the right to health for excluded communities.

    Doctors Without Borders

    Put your ideals into practice. Doctors Without Borders seeks infectious disease specialists, including HIV/AIDS and TB specialists. Doctors Without Borders /Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides assistance to people whose survival is threatened by epidemics, violence, neglect, or catastrophe in over 60 countries. HIV/AIDS and TB treatment and management are essential components of many projects. Doctors Without Borders urgently seeks experienced HIV/AIDS and TB specialists to provide quality care in more than 35 countries. Responsibilities: Program Management, Training, Direct Patient Care.     Fogerty International Center Research Scholars

    The NIH/Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars (FICRS) Support Center at Vanderbilt University/Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is pleased to announce a new one year clinical research training program for US citizens or permanent residents in either post-residency clinical fellowships or in other health-related post-doctoral programs. This new program is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center and several collaborating institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health and managed by Vanderbilt University, with fiscal support from the Office of AIDS Research, NIH.

    HIV/AIDS Clinical Preceptorship Program in Nigeria

    The University of Maryland’s Institute of Human Virology – Nigeria branch (IHV-N) is currently seeking infectious diseases-trained physicians or internal medicine physicians with experience treating HIV-infected patients to assist with establishment of quality Standards of Care in its PEPFAR-funded ARV treatment program in Nigeria. A time commitment of 1-3 months on site is preferred. All travel arrangements, housing, and a monthly stiped in USD will be covered. Click the link above to download terms of reference.

    I-TECH: International Training & Education Center for HIV
    Highlighted in the July edition of E-News, I-TECH currently offers positions in Namibia, India, and Haiti. I-TECH is particularly interested in professionals affiliated with the U.S.-based AETC program.

    ICEHA: International Center for Equal Healthcare Access

    The International Center for Equal Healthcare Access (ICEHA) is recruiting experienced physicians and nurses to volunteer for 6-12 weeks in developing countries. Using clinical mentoring techniques, volunteers provide HIV bed-side training to local healthcare providers. ICEHA is a non profit organization of physicians and nurses who volunteer to transfer their expertise on HIV care and infectious diseases to clinics in developing countries. ICEHA’s clinical mentoring program was developed specifically for the rapid scale-up of skills of the local healthcare staff, strengthening the quality of healthcare delivered in developing countries so that countries can fight the HIV epidemic from within. ICEHA’s largest programs are currently in Vietnam and Lesotho, and all expenses are paid.

    India Expedition Facts

    Medex International is looking for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, veterinarians and other medical professionals. This program allows us to bring medical care to members of the exiled Tibetan refugee community in Mundgod, India.

    MEDICO Programs

    Each team consists of 15-20 volunteers and travels to a rural area of Honduras. The team sets up makeshift dental, eye, and general medicine clinics, as well as a pharmacy area. Local residents often travel many hours to receive basic healthcare from the MEDICO volunteers.

    Northwest Medical Teams

    Northwest Medical Teams is a faith-based program that addresses the urgent needs of people living and dying with HIV/AIDS and their children and families. In collaboration with medical volunteers, partners and universities, the program seeks to prevent the spread of HIV through education and to respond to the needs of people affected by AIDS.

    Project C.U.R.E.

    Project C.U.R.E. is the world's largest distributor of donated relief to the developing world. In addition, Project C.U.R.E. is recruiting medical professionals to assist in training at hospitals and clinics around the world.

    Project HOPE

    Project HOPE offers an opportunity to employees, volunteers, and interns to gain a global perspective through clinical and/or academic teaching experience, exposure to health issues and needs in developing countries, development of healthcare systems and research, and experience in program planning and evaluation.

    US Doctors For Africa (USDFA)

    The US Doctors For Africa (USDFA) membership program is a network of US medical professionals who provide volunteer medical services for people suffering from HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. USDFA works in partnership with non-governmental organizations (NGO) and health care institutions that are in need of medical manpower throughout Africa.

    UT Southwestern Clinical Fellowship

    The UT Southwestern Clinical Fellowship in South Africa offers an in depth experience in HIV/AIDS and Developing World Medicine. The program was instituted by The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Wilson Foundation to assist the Waterberg Welfare Society’s efforts to care for HIV infected and affected children and adults. The Waterberg Welfare Society is a non-profit organization based in the Waterberg region of the Limpopo province of South Africa founded to initiate HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and treatment. To be eligible, applicants must be upper level residents or fellows, or be physicians recently completing their training in internal medicine, pediatrics, or family practice. For a minimum commitment of 3 months, extending up to 12 months if desired, participants will be provided with a generous stipend, airfare and safe/secure housing.

    Vital International Foundation

    The mission of the organization is to improve the sexual/reproductive health of people living in Africa by providing accessible HIV/AIDS/STD education, services, and support programs. Physicians, Nurses, Teachers, Colleges students and other medical personnel are needed.

    Medical Students

    Child Family Health International (CFHI)

    Four-week and eight-week elective courses for medical students and residents in Bolivia, Ecuador, South Africa, Mexico, and India. The program combines work in government hospitals and small primary care clinics with emphasis on infectious diseases.

    Inter-Community Development Involvement (ICODEI)

    ICODEI has been implementing community development programs in the rural villages of Western Kenya, where large international aid programs have never been.

    Project HOPE

    Project HOPE offers an opportunity to employees, volunteers, and interns to gain a global perspective through clinical and/or academic teaching experience, exposure to health issues and needs in developing countries, development of healthcare systems and research, and experience in program planning and evaluation.

    United Planet: Guatemala Healthcare Quest

    Pre-med, pre-dental students, medical and dental students, and nurses with intermediate to advanced Spanish. aiding the Palajunoj valley, Guatemala. The clinic combines clinical care, basic laboratory analysis, in-clinic education, and school-based outreach programs.
