Fellows Rotation in Private Practice Elective

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is pleased to share with you a proposed training curriculum (log in required) to allow physicians in the private practice of infectious diseases (ID) to play an integral role in the training of fellows interested in going into private ID practice or academic clinical medicine. This proposed curriculum, developed jointly by the IDSA Clinical Affairs Committee and the ID Training Program Directors Committee, is designed as a 2-4 week elective rotation in a private ID practice.

Such an elective rotation would be an invaluable venue to teach fellows about concepts unique to the private practice setting that traditional ID training programs are often ill-suited to teach. The information below is provided to explain the requirements and application process to potential physician preceptors and to give training programs a better idea of how such an elective might help their fellows meet specific learning goals and objectives.

ACGME and Residency Review Committee Requirements

The elective will be in full compliance with programmatic Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Residency Review Committee requirements for Internal Medicine subspecialty education including adequate attending supervision and appropriate duty hours. The hours of duty regulations that must be respected are: i) four 24 hour periods off per month with no call (even home call); ii) less than 80 hours of work in the hospital or clinic per week, averaged over the four weeks in a month; iii) adequate time for rest and personal activities must be provided. This should consist of a 10 hour time period provided between all daily duty periods and after in-house call. Duty hours do not include reading and preparation time spent away from the duty site.
