Honeycomb Carbon Crystals Possibly Detected in Space

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has spotted the signature of flat carbon flakes, called graphene, in space. As strong as it is thin, graphene conducts electricity as well as copper. Some scientists call it the "material of the future."

Airplane Plus Heat Plus Ice Equals Mystery

It's difficult to believe that an airplane flying in the tropics in the summer could have an engine fill up with ice, freeze and shut down. But the phenomenon, known as engine core ice accretion, has happened more than 150 times since 1988.

Space Station Crew Enjoys Eye-Level View of Perseid Meteor Shower

With the bright moon on August 13, many astronomy buffs weren't able to fully appreciate the Perseid meteor, but astronaut Ron Garan had a front row seat from the International Space Station.

A portion of the west rim of Endeavour crater sweeps southward in this color view from NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. This crater -- with a diameter of about 24 miles (22 kilometers) -- is more than 25 times wider than any that Opportunity has previously approached during the rover's 90 months on Mars.

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Reaches Endeavour Crater

After a journey of almost three years, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has reached the Red Planet’s Endeavour crater to study rocks never seen before.

Robotic Refueling Module To Be Relocated to Permanent Space Station Position

In September the Robotic Refueling Mission will be transferred to its permanent home on space station’s ExPRESS Logistics Carrier-4. Robotic operations for the technology demonstration are slated to begin soon afterward.

On Aug. 9, 2011, at 3:48 a.m. EDT, the sun emitted an Earth-directed X6.9 flare.

Solar Flares: What Does It Take to Be X-Class?

Solar flares are giant explosions on the sun that send energy, light and high speed particles into space and are often associated with solar magnetic storms known as coronal mass ejections. The biggest flares are known as X-class flares.

The Necklace Nebula is located 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagitta (the Arrow). In this composite image, taken on July 2, 2011, Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 captured the glow of hydrogen (blue), oxygen (green), and nitrogen (red). Hubble Offers a Dazzling 'Necklace'

A giant cosmic necklace glows brightly in this new Hubble Space Telescope image. The object, aptly named the Necklace Nebula, is a recently discovered planetary nebula, the glowing remains of an ordinary, Sun-like star.
