Almost exactly a decade after Mayor Richard Daley dismissed the idea of bidding for the Olympics as a con game because the U.S. Olympic Committee demanded $50,000 just to enter the competition, the Mayor spearheaded Chicago's successful effort to become U.S. bid city for the 2016 Summer Games. On April 14, 2007, the USOC board of directors chose Chicago over Los Angeles in the final round of a competition that began with five cities (Philadelphia, Houston and San Francisco were the others).
