Asian Security

National security and defense-related projects are a primary activity of the Political and Security Affairs (PSA) Group at The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR).

Coordinated under the aegis of the John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies, these projects address challenges and opportunities in the traditional and non-traditional realms, ranging from classic territorial disputes and uncertainty over military modernization programs, to environmental degradation and human insecurity – all with particular focus on the implications for U.S. interests in the region.

The John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies was endowed by NBR to honor General Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for his thirty-nine years of service to the United States as well as for his leadership on the NBR Board of Directors and role as Senior Advisor to NBR’s Strategic Asia program. The Chair seeks to inform, strengthen, and shape the understanding of U.S. policymakers on critical current and long-term national security issues related to the Asia-Pacific.
