C-SPAN Radio's Supreme Court Historic Oral Argument: Mississippi University for Women v. Hogan (1982)

Single Sex Education (Female)

Washington, DC
Saturday, July 2, 2011

C‑SPAN Radio begins its special series of five equal protection historic oral arguments with a 1982 case on single sex education (female): “Mississippi University for Women, petitioners v. Joe Hogan, respondent.”

Joe Hogan, a registered nurse and qualified applicant, was denied admission to the Mississippi University for Women School of Nursing's baccalaureate program on the basis of gender.  School officials gave Joe Hogan the option to audit courses, but he could not enroll for credit because he was male.  Created by a state statute in 1884, Mississippi University for Women was the first state-supported all-female college in the United States.
