The entitlement programs have a total of six trustees including the Secretaries of Treasury, Health & Human Services and Labor, the Social Security Commissioner and two public trustees appointed by the president.

Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum was questioned at the Des Moines Register’s editorial board meeting in Des Moines, Iowa.  The former Pennsylvania senator responded to questions on a range of topics that include agriculture, energy, manufacturing and corporate taxes.

Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH) spoke with reporters about the partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration. He sponsored a House amendment to the FAA reauthorization bill that would have stripped language from the bill making it harder for certain transportation workers to unionize. The amendment failed in the House, leading the President to issue a veto threat on the House version of the bill.

Assistant Treasury Secretary for Retirement and Health Policy Mark Iwry spoke at a conference hosted by the Boston College Center for Retirement Research. From his position at Treasury, Mr. Iwry is involved in helping to implement the 2010 health care law and pushing policies aimed at increasing retirement savings.

The Center for American Progress hosted a discussion on the state of security along the U.S.- Mexico border. Speakers at the event include a U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner, as well the as a former head of the Immigration and Naturalization Service during the Clinton Administration.  The discussion comes amid recent reports that the State of Arizona is soliciting private donations from around the country to help build a state-owned border fence.

The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa held a hearing on ethnic cleansing and the continuing humanitarian crisis in Southern Sudan.  The hearing comes one day after Southern Sudan’s largest rebel group declared a cease fire.  Southern Sudan voted in January to split from the north, but rebel forces continued to fight with government in the new country.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) spoke at the Young America’s Foundation National Conservative Student Conference in Washington, DC. Congressman Jordan came under criticism recently for encouraging outside groups to pressure fellow Republicans to vote against Speaker Boehner’s initial debt ceiling plan. Congressman Jordan heads the Republican Study Committee, a large conservative caucus in the U.S. House.
