My Role

Jason Grotto is a member of the Tribune's watchdog team. He specializes in using documents, databases, GIS mapping, and other analytical tools to expose breakdowns in public institutions and government programs.
My Biography

Born and raised in Chicago, reporter Jason Grotto earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 2000 and a bachelor's in U.S. History from the University of Oregon in 1995. Prior to joining the Tribune he was an investigative report for The Miami Herald, where he exposed corrupt development deals, sentencing disparities, breakdowns in the Florida's clemency process, and flaws in Miami's school construction program, among other stories. Since joining the Tribune, he has uncovered problems in Iraq war contracting, flaws in the Chicago Public Housing's Plan for Transformation and issues with Chicago's nonprofit hospitals. He also was part of a team that published a five-part series on the ongoing health and environmental impact of herbicides used during the Vietnam War.
