Boys basketball | 2011 Chicago Tribune All-State second team
Max Bielfeldt

High school: Peoria Notre Dame.

Class: Senior.

College: Michigan.

Position: Forward.

Height: 6-8.

Team highlights: Bielfeldt led Notre Dame to a 28-1 season that included victories against 3A champion Rock Island and 4A third-place finisher Glenbard East on the way to the way to the State Farm Holiday Classic title.

Individual highlights: Averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocked shots.

FYI: A throwback power forward who uses his strength and will to control the paint on both ends of the floor. Some questioned whether he's athletic enough to play for a high-major program, but John Beilein and Bruce Weber were not among them.

Johnny Hill

High school: Glenbard East.

Class: Senior.

College: Illinois State.

Position: Guard.

Height: 6-3.

Team highlights: Despite just three regular-season losses, Glenbard East was considered an afterthought in the East Aurora Sectional before pulling off two "upsets" to earn a date with Simeon in Peoria. The Rams pushed the 4A champs to the limit before falling 56-53 in a state semifinal.

Individual highlights: Two of his three 30-point games came in the state tournament, including 32 in the Rams' 63-51 supersectional victory over Rockford Auburn. Averaged 20.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists.

FYI: Illinois State was thrilled to sign him originally and has to be downright giddy with the way he improved as a senior. A classic two, he's at his best off the dribble but has range well beyond the 3-point arc.
