James Craig (Creage)

M, b. circa 1700, d. circa 1770

James Craig (Creage) was born circa 1700. He married (?) Unknown.
The earliest record found about James is the Indenture when he purchased 100 acres of land in Mill Creek Hundred from David and Margaret Cloyd, 2 April 1733. The original Indenture record is known to have been destroyed because the first pages of the record book at the courthouse in Wilmington, DE, where it should be found are missing. The next few pages now existing in the book are badly damaged and partly missing. Fortunately, considerable detail about the Indenture was included in the Indenture when James's son sold the property and in other Indentures. This property was small portion of the 15,500 acre tact of land that William Penn transferred to his daughter, Letitia, 27 Oct 1701. The Cloyd's had purchased 257 acres on 13 Jan 1732 and sold the remaining 157 acres to Samuel Nichols on 3 Sep 1749. Margaret was later killed by Indians in Virginia as noted below. Records indicate that James' occupation was that of a weaver. Although Mill Creek Hundred was the site of some weaving mills which can be located by an inspection of old maps, weaving was primarily a cottage industry in this time period. One publication states that the manufacture of textiles was first introduced in 1790. James' will was dated 14 Nov 1769 and probated 17 May 1770, New Castle Co., Delaware. The will names two daughters: Mary, wife of Samuel Henry; An[n], wife of Arthur McCluer [written as M Cluer in the will]; son, James; grandson William, and three children of Samuel Woods, Andrew, Rebecca and Isabell. Although James identified the relationship of others named in his will, it is possible these could be the children of another daughter or nieces and a nephew of his wife. The next record pertaining to this property is dated 27 April 1771 when the property, including the buildings, stables, orchards, and fields, are sold to Joshua Jackson by son James and his wife Jane. Additional details of this property are noted below. Another record of possible interest is the Estate Administration of Mary Henry in 1794. David Henry is named as a heir and John Gregg as next of kin. This record also notes that Mary Henry was the administrator of the Estate of David Henry so it does not appear to be the same Mary mentioned in the will of James Creage. Records of other Craigs living nearby that could be of interest include an Indenture dated 19 March 1734 when John and Elizabeth Craig sell Francis Woods 110 acres in White Clay Creek Hundred. There is also a survey record, dated 1 June 1758, which identifies the children of a William Craig, deceased, of Brandywine Hundred as: James, William and Rebecca, who could be cousins of the Craigs in Mill Creek Hundred.
James Craig (Creage) left a will on 14 November 1769 at New Castle Co., DE, All of the children and other persons named in the will are contained in this excerpt:

Item      I give & Bequeath unto my Dearly beloved Daughter Mary wife of Samuel Henry the sum of eighteen pounds & no more.

Item      I give & bequeath to my loving daughter An wife of Arthur M Cleur my negro girl or woman named Dinah

Item      I give and Bequeath to Andrew, Rebeca & Isbell daughters and son of Samuel Woods the sum of one Shilling Each Sterling

Item      I Give the remainder of all My Estate Booth real & personall to My dear & Loving Sone James Creage to him his heires & assinges For Ever he paying all my debts & Legacies & do appoint him Executor of this My Last Will & Testament hereby revoking all other Wills & Testaments Certifying this to be my Last Will & Testament where unto I have set my Hand & Seal the day and year above.
He died circa 1770 New Castle Co., DE.

James Craig was born circa 1724 New Castle Co., DE. He married Jane Wetherow on 7 April 1759 at Old Sweeds Church, Wilmington, New Castle, Co., DE.1

There is an Indenture in New Castle Co., DE, on 27 April 1771 where James and Jane Craig sold 100 acres to Joshua Jackson. The land had been purchased from David Cloyd on 2 April 1733 by James Craig, weaver, deceased, father of James Craig. The Indenture for this sale includes the survey description from the Indenture when James's father bought the property thirty eight years earlier noting that Richard McDonald's land is on the south side and David Cloyd's land is on the north side (David Cloyd and his wife Margaret had sold the rest of their property in 1749 and Margaret was killed in 1764 as previously noted). The Indenture was witnessed by Evan Rice and Lydia Rice and was proven in the November term of the New Castle Court by Evan Rice and signed by Judge/Clerk Theodore Maurice.2 A copy of this Indenture is contained in Appendix B. After selling this property in Delaware, records of James and Jane are next found in Virginia.
James bought two tracks of land from Joseph West in Loudoun Co., Virginia 15 November 1771. This transaction was done in the common lease and release practice used in those times. There is an Indenture Loudoun Co., VA, on 16 Nov 1771 where Joseph West and wife, Jane West, signed a release for two tracts of land paid for by James Craig. These tracts were 315 acres for 162 pounds and 100 acres for 160 pounds current money of Virginia. Leases for the same tracts of land are recorded on the previous day. This land had been granted to William Dodd by patent, 10 Dec 1742, and he had purchased an adjacent tract of land from William Dodd (See Figure 1). The 100 acre tract of this land was described as being on the west side of the NW Fork of Goose Creek.
Son William, the eldest of James's children, who was 2 when mentioned in his grandfather's will, has now reached 12 years of age. He would have had about four brothers and sisters by this time.3
He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index - Centennial Edition, pg. 692. From a record dated 11 Apr 1781, James was paid one hundred pounds of tobacco, according to law, for attending court four days as witness against the non-conformists in his district.
James Craig is listed in the tax records in 1787 at Loudoun Co., VA. He has no male children between the ages of 17 and 20. His son Robert, who is over 20 years old is living with the family. He has one slave under age 16 and one over age 17. He has seven horses, or similar animals, and 14 cattle.
He was The PETITION OF MERCHANTS OF ALEXANDRIA, 1792, included the signatures of James Craig and his sons, Samuel and James, Jr. (and about 122 others). This application To the Honourable the General Assembly of Virginia requested authority to establish a bank at Alexandria, Virginia, and was dated 9 Oct 1792. Capital of the bank was not to exceed 100,000 dollars in seven hundred fifty shares of 200 dollars each (sic) on 9 October 1792.      There is a deed (bill of sale) at Loudoun Co., VA, on 26 December 1794 where Jonathan Craig sold his father, James Craig, personal goods for ten pounds of good and lawful money of Virginia. This property consisted of one three year old black cow, two platters, six plates, three basins, two chairs, one chest and one bed with bedding. The bill of sale was dated December 26, 1794 and on April 13, 1795 the bill of sale was acknowledged by Jonathan Craig and recorded at a Court held for Loudoun County.4
There is an Indenture at Loudoun Co., VA, on 13 September 1806 where James Craig and his wife, Jane Craig, sell John Purcell 13 3/4 acres of land for and in consideration of the sum of forty pounds.5
James Craig left a will on 29 March 1808 at Loudoun Co., VA, which named his son-in-law's Edward Cavens and John Combs; daughters Agnes Redman and Isabel Huddleston; grandsons Isaac and James, sons of William, deceased; sons James and Samuel; and daughter-in-law Rebecca, wife of James. The will was witnessed by Israel Janney, John Brown and James Brown. The will was probated 13 Jan 1812. The only children not mentioned by name are his son, Jonathan, and daughters Margaret (wife of Edward Cavens) and Ann (wife of John Combs), all which are presumed to have died earlier although no records have been located. There is no reason to believe that other children of James and Jane Craig existed and were not named in this will. James apparently went to great length to name husbands and descendents of the children who were already deceased and until evidence to the contrary is found, the assumption that other children existed is disputed. Specifically, we find no justification to include the names of Absalom and Eleanor as has been done in some records.
James Craig appeared on the census of 1810 in Loudoun Co., VA, which includes the following information: living alone, over age 45. He died circa 1812 Loudoun Co., VA. There is an Indenture in Loudoun Co., VA, on 9 May 1814 where the lands inherited by James and Samuel Craig from their father are partitioned. See Appendix A, Virginia for a transcription of this Indenture.
