Visiting

Visitors can arrive in Christchurch through our international airport, by ship through the port of Lyttelton, by rail from the Inter Island Ferry at Picton, or by road on State Highway 1.

Getting here is easy. You may find leaving a little more difficult...

Swimmers at New Brighton beach

The Christchurch area offers long sandy beaches stretching all the way from the Waimakariri river in the north to Sumner in the south. But if secluded bays and exploration are more your thing, then Banks Peninsula waits to be discovered; offering unexpected tastes of French and Maori culture and hidden gems like Okains and Pigeon bays. Travelling by foot or wheel, the Summit Road winds tantalisingly around the rims of two extinct volcanoes and offers the traveller enough scenic views to fill a lifetime.

The Christchurch Tram outside the Art Gallery

Christchurch city has got to be one of the easiest cities in the world to get around. Its grid-like road system will help keep you from getting lost and the free shuttle buses that provide transport within the CBD will get you from one attraction to another without emptying your wallet. Visitors and residents can even travel while they dine on the restaurant tram!

Find out all you need to know about getting around on foot, by cycle, bus and tram or even where to park your car (and where not!).

Culture galore awaits the discerning visitor. Our modern art gallery, housed in a stunningly artistic building, provides exhibits that will delight and challenge an enquiring mind. If you prefer your culture live, the Court Theatre is renowned for its quality classic and contemporary productions.

Christchurch also has some of the oldest European heritage buildings in the country including the Provincial Council buildings and Our City O-Tautahi.

In this space there is so much that we have left unsaid. If you would like more information about visiting our wonderful City, living here, doing business here, studying here, or just enjoying yourself, you will probably find what you are looking for at our dedicated site: www.christchurch.org.nz.
