Cirque du Soleil's latest extravaganza, "OVO," brought out insect lovers this week for the opening-night party under the big top outside United Center.
But before the bugs began scurrying, flying and jumping, the social set had fun in the Tapis Rouge (red carpet) tent. The invite-only party included the opportunity to pose for photos against an "OVO" background and enjoy buffets from Levy Restaurants, as well as hors d'oeuvres.
Inside the Grand Chapiteau, the Champagne flowed, performance artists entertained and treats included Eli's Cheesecake bars courtesy of Maureen and Marc Shulman, who also supplied a 10-layer cake topped with a huge, buttercream egg. On the scene were WTTW's Greg Cameron, the Museum of Contemporary Art's Peter Taub, Chicago Loop Alliance's Ty Tabing, World Business Chicago's Lori Bush, Department of Cultural Affairs' Michelle Boone and Joffrey Ballet artistic director Ashley Wheater, who said: "OVO has the power to take you to another world. It is hip, it is fun."
"OVO" is the 25th creation in Cirque du Soleil's 25 years and a wonder for young and old alike, especially the intricate costumes by Liz Vandal.
Even the props were meant to stimulate the senses, like a 20-foot flower emitting a fragrance that filled the big top.
Deborah Colker, the show's writer, director and choreographer said: "Nothing will ever be the same again as this world, full of light and color ... adventure and passion. "
Never has the sound of buzzing insects been so delightful.
